Before I vanish into internet obscurity once again, I'd like to talk about one final point regarding all of this;

Optional.

An interesting word that many people seem to think is a valid argument when defending EA/Bioware's decision to separate this content and sell it to us as an additional package on release day.

"It's entirely optional. Yo don't have to buy it, you know."

I wonder how many people would have bought the original Mass Effect had it's 'optional' content been sold as additional content on release day?

- Planetary exploration and the side missions that accompany it: Optional
- Additional Armor found throughout the game: Optional
- Additional Weapons found throughout the game: Optional
- Armor and Weapon Upgrades: Optional
- Cutsomizable Commander Shepard: Optional
- Dialogue and Outcome Altering Choices: Optional
- Wrex, Garrus and Liara and any missions directly associated with them: Optional
- Various Game Difficulty Settings: Optional
- Anything in the Options/Settings Menu: Optional

Starting to look like a pretty bare-bones game, isn't it? The same could be said of Mass Effect 2 or pratically any other game... but most of all, RPGs. RPGs are all about options and optional content. It's what most people enjoy about them, getting lost in another world and living another life. One of the selling points of Skyrim for many people was the fact that it had an infinite amount of optional side-quests to keep people busy and playing the game straight out of the box and at no extra charge.

I have no problem with DLC. I love picking up a new mission after I've bought and finished a game that makes me go back to play it again. I also don't mind paying the price at that time for something that the Devs have worked on after they've finished the main game. The GTA IV, Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption and Oblivion packs all come to mind as being well worth the extra coin.

When you defend 'optional' content (that is actual content, not just weapon and character skins) that is released for a price on Day One simply because of the fact that it's 'optional', you're telling the Publishers/Developers that it's ok to start removing some of the things I mentioned above and charge you extra for them because they are after all, unnecessary to complete the game.

Is everyone ok with that?

Prothy never exclusive to the CE.... remember Zaeed was originally advertised as CE exclusive for mass effect 2 but we see how that turned out.

They more than likely just advertised it as such just to get more sales. And really think about this logically, do you really think they would ever make significant dlc exlusive to a certain few when they know for a fact others will pay for it? its a dick move but business wise its smart since were willing to buy it.

If I remember correctly Dragon age II had Sebastian, the exiled prince story line. Which was exclusive if you pre-ordered and switched to the Signature edition, which at the time they were selling for the same price as the regular edition, or something along those lines. I switched mine to the Signature edition, those that waited till opening day and got the normal regular edition were basically forced to shell out x amount of dollars for the exiled prince. I was totally not paying attention to the dragon age II boards, but seriously you had a chance to get the character for free and people didn't.

Flash to well today, I ordered the CE for the in game content, I honestly don't really care about the patch or the lithograph or the artbook, which is cool, and totally make up the 20 euro that I spent on the game. I ordered for the in game content, hell I didn't even know about the extra character till after I had pre-ordered it from gamespot like two weeks ago. I bought it for the extra weapons, the extra costumes, the robot dog and now apparently the Prothean which is a lore breaking move no matter what anyone says. And you know what, I got an amazing deal for all this. I paid 20 euro extra I get some physical content and more in game crap extending the game by 1-2 hours. Here's the thing I paid for all this, for anyone who is complaining saying it's not fair and blah blah blah Mass effect 2, stop acting like self-entitled brats.

I mean really, since when has any extra squaddie been that important that the game is broken without them. It was made to be DLC from the start. Why? Because it's something that people would want to buy. If it was a new character that happened to be human, do you honestly thing anyone would care that the CE got an extra character? No people would shrug, it's because it's a Prothean.

Cause Protheans are "so special" to Mass effect lore, and having one squaddie is so vital to the game. If there is anywhere in the game where I have to sacrifice a character. We all know who I'm going to sacrifice >_>

Like I said in another thread. I paid $50 for Pitfall on the Atari 2600 in 1980's. If some kid tells me that ME3 isn't worth $80 now, I would LAUGH IN HIS FACE. Just play Pitfall and tell me if it is worth $50.

With inflation, I am surprised games aren't $200. Kudos to game companies for keeping them reasonable after all these years while increasing production values. And, for your enjoyment...here is an example of a $50 game in the early 80s in case you weren't alive:

Wasn't happy about day 1 paid DLC but since I would of have to get the DLC anyway (assuming it came out post release) I got the Digital deluxe edition so I got that plus the N7 pack (some of the guns are overpowered).

But I made sure I went around the net to get it as cheap as humanly possible. In the end I managed 54.99 US with I think is pretty good.

For all we know its a cool but gimmicky character. Many characters in ME2 were total throw aways, but were interesting.
