one of my biggest fears is that game companies like bioware and others will actually listen to the forums and the small but vocal minority and that it will somehow influence their decisions regarding game development. i see lots of people claiming "Oh i dont care manuals suck anyway". well yeah you darn right they suck NOWADAYS! they used to be good. i like manuals they used to contain great information and background story and lore. it made the whole package that much more worth it.and i fear that bioware will read these forums and actually think "see? they don't like manuals anyway!" and that would be a big mistake cuz its only the small vocal minority that actually signs up for a forum account to actually talk here anyways and not representative of the much larger fanbase as a whole. And i am here to tell you I Like Manuals, I miss them, and I do not like the way the industry is headed lately and i am scared of where it might be in the next few years. /rant. whew.

Games are much simpler now.

The manual is included in game for all players for ease of use. This allows players to find the manual if they wish at any point that they need this.

I fail to see how this is a bad thing?

Coz we are so dumb that we cant remember whe we put'em?
Why  not let the price drop when all we get is a piece if plastic? Why not... argh, forget it

Maybe you could put one of those things that beep when you lose your keys on it?

Most games are being shipped with a 2 page manual these days. Like Gears of War 3 and CoD. It is because they are supposedly "going green" and that is their way of showing it.

It's funny how going green and going cheap is interchangable, I know at my work when we want to screw people over we say its "going green." I'm not saying that not having a manual is a horrible thing, it surpises me a bit, and I'm a bit sad that the days of 30 page gmae manuals are gone. Hell even pokemon had like 25-30 pages and it was mostly just drawings.

Skyrim is the last game I bought to have a manual. And that thing was like 20 pages, and in color!

It's a good thing. On the other hand, as I recall, you mentioned yourself being one of the older gamers. Don't tell me you didn't like to read the physical copy of the manual while installing Planescape: Torment or Lost Vikings or whatever.
Or was it just me?

But anyways, with this computer performance we have these days, it won't be a problem, I mean, nowadays you don't install a game for one and a half hours. :)

It's a logical next step. If you wanted to know what a spell did in DA:O you had to look it up in the game.

It's not like paper manuals are a great way to present information.

This is what the contents of a game box should look like:

(Sorry about the poor quality of my camera phone.)

It's a pity it doesn't work that way anymore in the games industry.

Edit: Edited for less unintended irony and more pictures.

Dude there isn't a price drop uy bying digital, there should be since they don't have to pay for making the disk, case, shipping, or anything like that. Asking gmae publishers to lower the price of something just becuase its cheaper for them now is like asking OPEC to lower the price of gas because they just found out that the mantel is nothing but oil, they aren't going to because they know you will pay for it anyway.

Yeah, true. I got a paper map with my Skyrim as well, that was a nice surprise. And the Witcher 2 box was loaded with goodies.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that a manual can add a lot to the complete experience. In my pictures, there are three manuals included - one that tells you how to play the game, one that goes into detail about the lore, geography, beastiary and culture of the gameworld and one that has a detailed description of the magic system, with no less than two pages dedicated to each and every spell in the game. This is part of the reason the Ultimas are widely regarded as the best RPGs in the world, the gaming "experience" began before you even started the game. The detailed manuals contributed immensely to it.

Plus its nice to have that stuff if your like me and hate having to sit in front of a screen and read text like that. I would much rather have a printed copy.

Personally, I'm just glad I'm not stuck with a stupid separate French version of the manual, that doesn't even fit in the box because it's uncropped.

Here's an idea. Go to Gamestop, buy Gears of War 3. Take it home, print out a Mass Effect 3 logo and tape it on the cover.

Read and digest.

About the same time the rest of the industry did.
