heck I'm sittin here lookin back at all the beautiful manuals of older bioware games and I'ma bout to weep. KOTOR has such a fat beautiful manual chock full of great tidbits everywhere. where did Bioware lose this passion?!?

About the same time the rest of the industry did.

When everything was required to be in a CD case or get a hefty additional cost slapped on it.

Doesn't the Codex contain all those "useful tidbits" you're talking about? I mean I understand that you liked the weight and aesthetic of a good manual, I do too, but the content is still there in a different form.

Mass Effect and even DAO never really had manuals filled with lore, they had codexs. The only thing that seems to have been lost with this game, is a 2-3 page manual with at max a two paragraph summary of the plot, that would have ended with something like "the war to take back earth begins now" or some other cliche tag line.

I'm not saying it's not a shame to loose glossy manuals, but the content is just being put in a different place, not removed.

I sense that your not gong to be happy with ME3 either way if your trying to find problems. Manuals who needs manuals unless its something like a strategy game. Save the trees the last game I bought BF3 had no Manual it was digital. Digital is the way of the future.

Doesn't really matter to me that there's no physical manual, although I miss the smell of a fresh manual

This still falls under my "I hate reading text on a computer screen" problem, I'm not saying relasing the codexs in print is a smart idea, I'm just saying that game manuals used to have all sorts of fun things to help draw you in to the game more, hell DA:O at least tried to give some intresting descriptions on the classes.

That's fair, though I will point out at least all the primary Codex entries in Mass Effect 1 and 2 read by a narrator.  i know that's not necissarily a sollution to the problem, but it does provide an alternative to reading it on a screen.

I don't mean to sound flippant though, I understand this is a real issue for some gamers, i myself don't always like reading from a computer screen either.  I just made my post to reflect that Bioware is at least still making lore entries, it is just how they are being delivered to the player that has changed.

Most games are being shipped with a 2 page manual these days. Like Gears of War 3 and CoD. It is because they are supposedly "going green" and that is their way of showing it.

When an FPS has more of a manual than an RPG, you know you have a problem.

Or a TPS... wait... that's what ME3 is aspiring to be.

So, manuals are "tru arr pee gee" elements now? Neat.

If you want something to read it in the toilet, invest in cheap comic books. It's the first time I actually hear that people bring their game manuals to the toilet.

Thats true, and I love the codexs in both games. It's just weird having my pregaming instal ritual ruined because someone decided not to spend a buck on some paper.

Finally, something original to compain about!

I know. I am curious if people find more original ideas until march 6

edit:

sadly the area of manuals and huge boxes for games are gone.

Miss those boxes, still have most of them.

The manual is included in game for all players for ease of use. This allows players to find the manual if they wish at any point that they need this.

I fail to see how this is a bad thing?

That's cool, I don't really disagree with you. I still have a small collection of old manuals from things like baulders gate and starcraft.

I just think there is a difference between enjoying a manual more then codex entries, or enjoying printed manual more then digital ones, and claiming that Bioware is less an RPG then a FPS.  The content is there, just not in a form all of us are comfortable with.

You are really gonna play the "I'm ignorant" game, aren't you?
No, obviously not, but a fully fleshed out RPG should need a manual, not a card that just says, "Press [space]." My point is that it is demonstrative of the complexity of the game. Streamlining is good, but even the manual in ME2 was useful for some (even if I never used it.)

This thread has a good title.

Comparing the inability to holster with the lack of paper manual is perfect, since they're both things that don't matter at all, yet are complained about for some inexplicable reason.

Yeah, it totally doesn't matter at all. Except to people other than you. You might care about some comic book character, but I could not care less. Does that mean it doesn't objectively matter at all? No, and stop being so damn ignorant. There are actually people besides yourself.

Pre order cancelled.... Alas the world is ending, for there are no little books that tell us controls. Even though we never read them. The days of having a good paper weight are forever gone. WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!11

Paper manuals are easier to use. They allow the player to flip through them without having to dig through menus.

Paper is a superiour medium for text. I like manuals.

I can objectively say that the lack of a paper manual isn't of any objective importance, especially when a perfectly good digital manual is right there in the game.

It's the same with weapon holstering. If you really feel the need to justify having your weapon out all the time for the sake of role-playing, there's a war on.

Stop throwing the world "ignorant" around like it's some sort of miracle word that makes you right in every instance.
