I like my frost spells on my mage. Chance to shatter the target is good :)

Quick question. Is Mana Drain bugged or something?

I have never actually gained any mana from this spell. the animation plays, the spell goes on CD, but i NEVER gain any mana??

Here's what I will try next time:

Arcane Bolt - Arcane Shield - Staff Focus - Arcane Mastery (4)

Flame Blast - Flaming Weapons - Fireball (3)
Rock Armor (1)
Winter's Grasp - Frost Weapons - Cone of Cold - Blizzard (4)
Lightning - Shock - Tempest - Chain Lightning (4)

Heal (1)
Glyph of Paralysis - Glyph of Warding - Glyph of Repulsion (3)

Mana Drain - Mana Cleanse - Spell Might - Mana Clash (4)
Mind Blast - Force Field (2)

Vulnerability Hex - Affliction Hex (2)

Group Heal - Revival (2)

This assumes level 23 (so 24 level based points + 3 plot based + 3 tomes).

the fireball is excellent for wiping out clustered enemies that will be a pain to deal with otherwise, and it doesn't take long for it to cooldown. its great for keeping enemies back to let your companions tear them to shreds. the mana drain line is extremley effective against mage opponents. i also love the lightning spells cuz they damage pretty well and drain mana/stamina.Posted Image

See, for me, what it comes down to is all about debuffers. I am on second play through as a mage, and so far, primal has been completely unnecessary. I had the entire Entropy group, plus some healing. I used shapeshifter and that was it. Didn't ever need something else. Hope that helped!

There are three spells I always take because they're just that good to have: Fireball, Winter's Grasp and Cone of Cold.

Beyond that, I favor blood mage for alternating between mana and health, and for using Blood Wound. Other favorites are the Walking Bomb spells, the hexes, the glyphs and, Force Field and Mana Clash, depending on my current craving for cheese.

The ultimate spell combo by the way is the perfect storm combo. It's so crazy overpowered I don't use it anymore.

Anybody run a mage without specialisations? Planning on doing DA again and as I haven't done a mage (beyond level 2) I have to say none of the specialisation really appeal to me that much, from an (RP pov) other than Shapeshifter which I understand is sort of pants.

I kind of feel I'd prefer to build my mage from the standard spell trees. Is this going to gimp me toward the end of the game?

The easiest way is to play origins in any way you want,
and after you imported, buy a respec? drink from Herren.
or install a respec mod and use it before you import

No mage specs are necessary, so it's perfectly viable. Some people pick blood magic and spirit healer for the spellpower boosts then don't take any of their spells.

Seconded.

One of the big selling points for mage is that as long as you pump magic (and willpower a bit), you can pretty much pick whatever spells you like without gimping the character. There is obviously a huge trove of vanilla spells to pick from, so go nuts on them.

Personally I to do something similar. Shapeshifter sucks unless you're built specifically for it, Arcane Warrior requires a very specific (and rather non-magey) playstyle, and I don't like Blood Mage for RP reasons. So when I play a mage I generally only pick one spec (spirit healer) if any.

Arcane warrior grant useful skills such as ability to wear any armor,
many of which has large mana reserves, (it also look a heck of a lot better, and has...armor)
plus fade shroud which grant mana regeneration and 25% dodge chance,
and you can play it as a pure mage if you wish, -no need to activate the two sustainables,
but one of those sustainables makes you invulnerable, should you find yourself in a tight spot.
And as said earlier, you can buy a potion from herren that un-do all spells, almost at beginning of awakening

I confess I've overlooked some of the passive stuff, and you are all quite right; I don't have use the spells and sustains if I don't want to. Having my male mage not wear a dress is worth Arcane Warrior alone :)

Thanks guys.

Elemental hexes, blood wound, the glyphs, and mana clash are all necessities imo.
