In Mass Effect parts 1 and 2, which characters can be left behind and not included on the team?

I'm replaying both games and want to have the smallest team possible in each title.  I'm playing as a Male Vanguard with an Ashley-like case of space racism, and don't want those damn dirty aliens on my ship!  :-)

In Mass Effect 1, it seems like Wrex is the only character you can choose not to take.  I've heard that you can skip Garrus and/or Liara, but for the life of me I can't figure out how.  Anyone done this without modding/cheating?

In Mass Effect 2, you can choose not to activate Grunt and Legion, but are there ways to not bring them on the ship at all?  What about other characters?  Anyone figure out the path to recruit the absolute fewest team members?  It seems like Miranda, Jacob, and Mordin are required.  What about the other batches of three?  The first group is Garrus, Grunt, and Jack....we know that you can not wake Grunt up, but can either of the other two be skipped over somehow?  The second batch is Samara, Tali, and Thane....is this another two out of three thing?  Can any of that second group be skipped?  Finally you get Legion, who seems to be required to bring on board but not required to power up.  Zaeed and Kasumi are obviously optional to download, but once you own them is there a way to not take them aboard?  Seems like that's possible for Kasumi but maybe not Zaeed?

Any input would be great.  I'd love to hear from anyone else who's attempted a double run through with the fewest characters.

No what?

Are you saying that only Wrex, Grunt, and Legion can be skipped?

In Mass Effect 1, Kaidan, Ashley, Tali, and Liara are mandatory; and one of Wrex or Garrus are optional. To not recruit Garrus, you must: 1) Talk to Harkin about finding Garrus, 2) Go find Garrus, 3) Go after Fist without finding Wrex. 4) When going up to the Normandy, Wrex will stop you. Choose the appropriate renegade option to tell him you do not want him on your team. He will stay by the elevator the entire game, but do not talk to him. For Garrus, same thing, except talk to Barla Von, then recruit Wrex, go after Fist without finding Garrus.

And if you have Wrex, recruit Liara before Virmire, and then you can kill Wrex to shorten your team (choose renegade options). If you do not have Liara or Garrus, Wrex cannot be killed on Virmire.

For Mass Effect 2, Jacob, Miranda, Jack, Garrus (Archangel), and Mordin are mandatory. You must complete Grunt's Loyalty mission, but you do not have to wake him.

To trigger the Disabled Collector Ship mission (which then unlocks the Reaper IFF which will unlock the Suicide mission), you must have 8 squadmates. So if you have Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Garrus, and Mordin, you must recruit 3 of Grunt, Kasumi, Zaeed, Tali, Samara, or Thane. On the Reaper IFF you are will automatically recover Legion, but you can give Legion to Cerberus, or you can keep Legion without activating Legion.

I have skipped Garrus at least once in Mass Effect 1, and twice I have played Mass Effect 2 without recruiting Tali, Samara, and Thane (Legion not activated or given to Cerberus).

Edit: Forgot about Garrus in ME2, and you need 8 squadmates for the Disabled Collector Ship mission.

Thanks. You don't mention Garrus as being skippable in ME2....is he?

Also, if I have Wrex AND Garrus, is it possible to not recruit Liara or is she always needed, no matter how late you get her?

I think I'm going to go with Garrus over Wrex in this ME1 playthrough, and put off Liara as long as possible. I'll sacrifice Kaiden.

Then for ME2 I will get Miranda/Jacob/Jack/Mordin, then maybe Kasumi, Zaeed, and maybe Tali. If I need Garrus I guess I'll have to get him too. Forgetting about Grunt, Legion, Samara, and Thane. Would be really funny if there was a "space racist" game option that had you only recruit humans, lol.

I am saying that no one can be skipped in ME2, except for legion and grunt.
obviously you don't need zaeek or that thief girl I can't remember the name on.

Oops. Forgot about Garrus in ME2 for some reason. Garrus is required in ME2, and 8 squadmates are required to trigger the Disabled Collector Ship (I said 7 originally since I forgot about Garrus). Edited my original post.

While you cannot recruit only humans, you can complete the Suicide Mission so that only humans remain.

Liara is required in Mass Effect 1. You need Liara's freaky eye black "Embrace Eternity" thing to discover that the Conduit is on Ilos.

Can't you just walk past Zaeed? I haven't played ME2 in a while now, but I seem to recall when you get to Omega he's standing there talking to the Batarian he's just caught, and you have to actually click on him to start the conversation, so you should be able to just walk by and never recruit him.

Is he a "must click" or one of those that triggers automatically when you get close enough?

He's at least unique in that he's the only one who can die after the SM...

You can just walk right on past him. It has been a while, but I seem to recall that if you get too close, it may trigger your conversation with him. As long as you veer right to the door you can avoid him.

How do you kill someone after the suicide mission?  The only one I can think of is Samara.....

You can kill Zaeed after the suicide mission by doing his Loyalty mission, but not taking the path that he wants and leaving him behind when you are given that option. (Or at least I think that's how you do it)
