I'm doing one now with my beloved Kadeth Hawke. A 100% die hard Templar supporting blood mage. Meredith loves him, so does Fenris. Great chat with Meredith about her sister in act 3 doing it.

I mean a mage is a mage, you have to use magic so it's just a normal mage build for whatever school you chose but, yes a mage can be entirely anti-mage.

I think she meant "mage optimized for killing other mages."

For that... well, I'm not a mechanical expert, but Dispel Magic and paralyze/stun spells would be the best way to do it. Entropy has a few different ways to pull it off, and Primal can be good at it too.

Anti-Mage would not be hard to do, especially with a warrior Hawke since you could go Templar and get the 50% magic resistance not to mention the 10% increased damage to Mages and Fade creatures you get for simply picking Templar.

Mage Hawke would be good too since you could dispel their shields that they like to bring up. Enemy mages are also weak to Spirit attacks, so staves like Malcolm's Honor (from DLC pack 1) or spells like Spirit Bolt will bring em down quickly. Chain Lightning works well for taking out the fodder enemy mages, for the elites or higher, use Crushing Prison on staggered targets to take em out of the fight long enough to kill em, especially if they are a Blood Mage (ie. Huon).

Rogue Hawke would be a little tougher, but you could use Anders or Merrill to dispel the shield then brittle em, then use Assassinate (or Archer's Lance if you are feeling ballsy). Or you could dispel their shields then hit 'em with Vendetta.

Blood magic works well for killing mages as well. I use blood+ fist of the maker and entropy from there.
