With ever year that passes, gaming companies take things a little further. One major aspect of gaming that has taken strides is customization. Examples? ok. We had Skyrim last year that abolished their class system in favor for impromtu JOAT (jack of all trades) play. Soon we will have Diablo 3 which gives you the ability to swap out skills rather than locking you into them permanently. Guild wars 2 has 8 classes that can all be accessed by any race.

So where am I going with this? Am I just some crazy forum goer with a dream? Probably. But I have a reasonable, and realistic dream.

Think for a second about how the character selection screen looks. You have a bar for each class, and 4 races within each bar. Most were grayed out for you when you first loaded up the demo right? Well, as you progressed, you obtained these neat shiny cards that unlocked new races for each class. (after getting male human soldier 14 times, of course) So now, after a bit of a grind, you've unlocked a new race for a class.

But say you've been playing this game since ME1 and you've already developed a sort of ME world identity for yourself. What if you just love Turians, but you're also the best damn infiltrator in the world? Well, sadly, you don't get to live out your dream as a stealthed Turian. But wait, Ruk has a crazy idea.

You load up your ME3 demo for the first time. You go to character selection and find 5 bars, each one represents 1 of the playable races. You click on Asari, but alas, only the Asari soldier is available. The rest of the bar contains pictures for each class, albeit grayed out. "what the hell" you think. You look at all the races to find that each one only has soldier available. (it's really not hard to carry a gun around right?) you dejectedly pick a quarian soldier and play some games.

Finally you have enough points for a veteran box! You open it up and find that you recieved an Infiltrator card! You rush over to the character selection screen, and you see that each race's infiltrator class is highlighted. Now you get to pick which inflitrator you want! Of course, you pick Turian. You notice that each race/class combo also has slightly differing skills. (you know, to make them different.) Customization options like colors? Baseline, of course. I don't think it's very hard to paint armor.

What the hell am I getting at? This: All classes should be available to play on any race. The accepted excuse is that not every race can be certain things, like biotics and tech. But wait, aren't we supposed to be some kinda special forces? Why shouldn't we be rare and talented people? I know for a fact that biotics can be found in every race, and I don't think tech is hard to teach. There really isn't a decent excuse for the absence of choice. This goes back to my whole customization speil. Why are we tethered down by arbitrary boundaries, that just limit our freedom of choice, and our identities as ME players? I don't think theres a reason.

My idea would keep the current random pack system, but would let us have freedom of choice. So band together Krogan Vanguards and Turian Infiltrators! to Salarian soldiers and Quarian Adepts! We are in 2012!  Customization and uniqueness is the future, why do we live in the past?

Cheers, and I'll see you all March 6th!

It wouldn't really tie in to the lore, but then it has done in Mass Effect 3. Volus Adept - admittedly, he wasn't good. But, he still had Biotics. Choosing a Krogan as an Infiltrator would be a bad idea.
It should punish you for that, not just not allow you to do it.

Is there really such a large skill curve for sniping and cloaking? I for one love using the widow on my krogan solider. I don' really see the problem.

When we're talking about Krogan and Sniping it's not about skill. It's about patience, most Krogans do not have the patience to line up shots with a sniper. However, I agree with you. Gameplay should always come before Lore IMO.

The funniest part about this thread is the Turian Infiltrator... for some reason, you can't have one. But Garrus?

And isn't Wrex a Vanguard?

Exactly, there realyy is no reason why these combos don't exist lorewise, its either one of two situations. 1) lazyness. Or 2) future DLC. It's probably a combo of both, though.

Wrex was an ME1 vanguard, not sure if they still consider him that in ME2 or 3.

I've seen a ton of Asari and Salarian sentinels in ME2. The choices they limited it to didn't seem to be based on lore.

Has it actually been stated what all the race/class combos are or are people just taking that from the character select screen in the demo? Am I the only person that thinks there might be extra secret characters?

A few have been hinted at, Asari Vanguard for example. But nothing suggests all classes will be avaliable for all races.

ITT: We base what we've seen in the demo to be the full game.

They've said it once, maybe many other times, the unlockables in this demo aren't even half wahts in the full game

It's this way for balance, not lore or just to ****** you off.

I'm not really certain one way or another.

But this is Bioware. "It's totally going to be way bigger and better next time you see it" is kind of their main tactic.

I agree with this. I would play a Quarian all the time if I could be any class.

And what, exactly, restricting certain classes for certain races does for balance?

Ok, well. I think that only applies to guns and mods. Why would they show only a few " unobtainable" characters like the turian soldier, but hide other ones. I'm not following this logic.

The big one of course is Krogan Vanguard. Rage + Melee + Biotic Charge *might* be a little too good...

This was my understanding as well.

Well, I assume there will be more than 2-4 levels and 1-2 enemy types.

theres a **** ton of levels, but I'm only aware of 3 enemies: Geth, Reapers (husks included with them) and Cerberus.

Obviously the point of this thread: my idea for a new card system got kinda over looked in favor of arguing whether we should have all classe/race combos.

Oh well.
