After playing a few classes who use grenades i've tried to figure out the mechanics of when I can reload them.  The ammo caches will reload grenades but sometimes they only have one, or two or none. Does anyone know how this actually works?  Is each cache on a timer creating a new grenade and whoever grabs it first gets it?  Am I on a timer myself and no other grenade using class can affect it?  Do the timers reset with each wave?  I've tested this myself in certain scenarios and I'm stumped.  If anyone has any extra information i'd really appreciate it.

From what i've gathered ammo piles will grant 0, 1, or 2 grenades, never 3. There is unquestionable a reset timer before you get 2 grenades again to avoid nade spam.

I'm not sure I understand the logic of avoiding grenade spam. They don't seem exceptionally good compared to powers (which you can use infinitely).

I've seen Human Soldiers using their grenades to great effect, going as far as killing 4~6 enemies at once. I find them very situation specific, though I did not play for long periods of time with any character that has grenades in their possession.

I may be at a disadvantage here, because I tried grenades and found them to be inacurate and far too small of a radius, so I just ignored most of my chracter's grenade upgrades.

But meanwhile I can blast enemies with Concussive Shot over and over again with a 1 second cooldown like an infinite long ranged, curving shot gun blast. So to me, the grenade ammo thing seems totally silly.

I can see why, Krogan inferno grenades can clear a room instantly.

From the games I've played I believe each player has a grenade 'cool down' before he can restock, and each grenade having it's own timer. I suspect the harder the difficulty the longer the recharge.

I got a buddy that uses frags very effectively. He decided to forgo concussive shot it favor of the frags (much to our party's dismay). But in a pinch I am glad he has them.

There is no cool down I found. I didnt even know you got refills on grenades till yesterday and then I started spamming then like crazy. I was so sad i wasted so much experience in a perk i got to use twice in 10 waves. Now its an actually good power so the soldier has anything besides concussion shot.

Its a bit buggy though depending on how much ammo you have. I go in with full ammo get zero grenades, shoot off a full clip now it gives me two. I found just holding down the trigger when heading to the reload box gives you 2 every time. Before sometimes it would be 1 or none

I think grenades are a huge help, especially the cluster grenade.

Today I was playing with cluster grenades (only unlocked 2 at a time) and I only got a refill from the same box twice within maybe 15 seconds. I think maybe they have a set amount of grenades per every however many seconds.

And yeah, I don't think I've ever gotten all three grenades out of one box.

Cluster grenades are amazing, clear out halls like nothing else.

Also no idea bout the restocking, normally have to visit 2 ammo piles to get all 3 grenades, quite annoying but understandable I guess.

I always top off my nades. If I use one or two I make it a priority to hit an ammo crate or two. My Drellguard is a 50% effectiveness with out nades. If I wait till I run dry the randomness of the ammo crates is brutal.

From what I've observed, each ammo box respawns a grenade item separately. That grenade item is first come, first serve - if one of your teammates grabs it, you'll either have to wait for the ammo box to spawn a new one, or find a different ammo box.

Also, as near as I can tell, each grenade item is worth 2 grenades. I base this off of incidents where I have 2/3 grenades remaining, grab 1 from an ammo box, and am unable to grab any more after throwing another. On the other hand, whenever I have 1/3 grenades remaining, the ammo box refills it to 3/3. Although you can never pick up 3 grenades from a single ammo box, two different ones can net you 4 (so long as you throw 1 before you go to the second box).

I've found that there is indeed a "cooldown" time before the ammo caches give you more grenades and that on silver missions rather than two grenades per cache you only get one.

The grenade timer seems to make the soldier an inferior class compared to the others, especially on gold where power usage is key to victory.

I would have said the weapon weight and weapon effectiveness balancing is what actually does that.

I don't think I bothered to use grenades all that much as a Soldier in Gold.  They are fine situationally, but spamming concussive shot is actually fairly effective.  Probably moreso.

But doesn't offer variety to the class and makes it boring to play.

Inferno Grenades one shot puds easily on Bronze and Silver. Frag grenades kill guardians even if thrown at their shield.

Grenades are boss. Haven't played with much of the other grenades other than cluster and those require a really fine touch to use right.

I'm not sure if it's personal cooldown or if the ammo box just spawns a certain number of grenades and I'm not sure at all personally which it might be as I have randomly resupplied grenades after hitting the same box within a short period of time.

I've seen frags, inferno, and cluster grenades all used to great effect. Each of those can take out an entire cluster of enemies, provided you can aim it properly. Infiltrator's sticky grenades are powerful, but their blast radius is so small I can only ever take out one or two enemies at a time, so I don't really use them that much. They'd make an ok panic button, except Infiltrators already have the best panic button in the game with tactical cloak.

Grenades are, as many have stated - AMAZING. They're damage is the best in the game for sheer burst damage. And not being tied down to cooldowns is fantastic.

As for how you get more if you look in any ammo box you'll notice each one has 2 thermal clips on 1 side, and 1 grenade (grey thing) on the other. Novaria map in the demo has 2 boxes per pickup point. The other map only has 1 per pick up point so you only get 1 grenade from that map, and 2 from the other.

They respawn just like the thermal clips do but I think a bit slower.

-edit-
Oh and another fun thing to try as a Krogan Soldier. Throw out that grenade and wait for one of the enemies HP to get lower, then Carnage em. It'll turn that normal blood chunks into a Firy Explosion of bloody chunks. I've sometimes only hit 1 enemy with the grenade (surpising giving its radius) but then used the Carnage bit to kill him + 3-4 other guys who're uneffected.

It's reeaaallly satisfying.
