Should I at least read about The Arrival before playing ME3?

^ title. Interested because I know it is an important part of the plot, but is it needed?

i wouldnt say its crucial, its more of a bridge to mass effect 3, all you'd really need to know is a batarian world was destroyed from shepard destroying a mass relay to delay the reapers and therefore is why hes relieved of duty at start of mass effect 3

Quite interesting indeed. I was wondering why people were said Batarians were pretty much screwed.

Shep does more than blow up a single planet - she takes out an entire system and the relay to/from it.

Speed story:

Shep infiltrates a batarian prison to save Dr. Amanda Kenson, a scientist/expert on Reapers. Shep saves Kenson and she takes Shep back to the giant asteroid that Kenson was going to use to destroy the "Alpha Relay". She mentions "Object Rho", a Reaper artifact that has helped her and her team learn about the inevitable Reaper invasion, thus why they planned to destroy the Alpha Relay. Shep discovers that Object Rho has been sitting in the middle of a room and has indoctrinated Kenson. You basically try to survive 5 rounds of mercs shooting at you while Object Rho talks to Shep. Shep gets knocked out and put to sleep for 2 days. Shep breaks out and starts the project to destroy the relay. Kenson tries to stop Shep, but Shep can shoot her or she blows herself up. Shep escapes, but before the Normandy comes, Harbinger appears and says that Shep only stalled the inevitable. Shep can say "shove it" or "we'll die fighting". Shep gets saved by the Normandy and the asteroid destroys the relay, killing rough 305,000 batarians.

On the Normandy, Hackett appears and Shep explains what happened. Hackett says Shep will most likely face trial for his actions (alluding to the original plan that ME3 would start off as a trial).

Batarians should all die to be honest. They're an aggressive race that doesn't help the galaxy in any way. Then again, the Quarians don't either but I like them too much.

It really helps set you up for ME3, but it's not necessary and Elegana summarized it nicely.
I just got done pushing my four Sheps through it a few days ago honestly.

Read the Elegana's summary and watch the trailer (). That pretty much explains everything. Also, look up the DLC's music, it's pretty cool.

I think the issue people have with the opening is that they imagined a scenario in their heads that didn't happen. I'm sure a bunch of people imagined Shepard sitting in a court room with a judge and jury when the Reapers bust in.

But, in reality, Shepard is facing a military tribunal. And the "trial" is a long drawn out process. Shepard is under house arrest while they dither about for months about to do with her.

Not to mention, no one knows what the military justice system process is in 2185.
