As part of my preparation for ME3 I have been replaying through ME1 and ME2 in order to create my 'ideal' save state. However, while rushing through ME2 with some cheating (resource scanning multiple times? I stick with save editor), the navigational problems with the Mako make similar rushing through ME1 relatively difficult. However, in order to experience the multiple romance options I was hoping to make a save game before following conversation paths with either Liara, Ashley or neither.
So the question is:
What is needed in order to advance the character conversations within Mass Effect 1? Does it require the completion of a UNC mission or can they only be advanced following the completion of a main quest?
And, without spoiling with specifics:
Are the minerals, medals, writings and prothean discs brought in by ME3? (A simple yes will suffice)
Lastly. Yes, I know about the website Mass Effect Save Games, however in a majority of cases there are a few things about the saves that I do not like and would prefer to do myself. IE a pure Paragon run through with full completion of all UNC and side quests without any Renegade options. The only difference being the romance decisions and who is sacrificed on Virmire. I also realize this specifically isn't the forum for ME1, however since others may also be preparing for ME3 this seems like the best place to pose the question.

I'm guessing the ME1 consequences are pretty much this:
Important: Rachni; Council; who represents earth; LI; who got "virmired"; did Wrex survive Virmire?
ME2: LI; who survived the SM; Samara/Morinth; CB; Spectre?; Conrad (just a hunch); Genophage Cure (saved or destroyed); Grunt (opened?); Legion (sold to Cerberus or activated); Heretic Geth (destroyed or reprogrammed); Tali (gave evidence or followed Tali's instructions); Overlord; Firewalker. Other than these Liara becomes SB anyway; Arrival happens anyway. I don't think the rest will make or break ME3.
Since Genesis program for ME2 does not include the Prothean disks and Matriarch writings etc. minerals I doubt these would be brought into ME3. But there are bonuses that you do get at the start of ME2 if you did ME1 that you don't get from the Genesis program.
I'm doing a run through now. I've got several. One paragon, several paragades, and now a renegon > renegade run.
Note: I'm not going to go crazy scanning planets for minerals. Just doing enough to get what I need.

only main quest...

I realize that the main quests 'limit' how far the conversations can go, I was just wondering if I did both Feros and Noveria, without talking to Ashley or Liara, I could 'catch up' by just talking to them over and over again. Whether I have to complete UNC missions or I can just complete conversations back to back.
