I'm completely new to the modding process, so I apologize for my ignorance and any seemingly "duh!" kind of questions.

I've played DA:O so many times, I've decided to spice it up a bit for something different with the lovely Dragon Age Redesigned mod. It doesn't include an Alistair mod, alas, and love him though I do, I'd like to try something different. There are a lot of great companion mods out there elsewhere, but I've yet to find one for Alistair that I really like, so I thought I'd try to make my own.

I've figured out how to create a face morph from the default human, dwarf, elf, and qnari bases in the Toolset, and I've figured out how to open the Alistair .mor file as well. However, when you're creating a new .mrf you can see the head and all the changes you make to it, but I'd like to be able to start with Alistair's .mor file as a base and be able to edit it and be able to see the changes as I experiment with them, and I haven't figured out how to do that. I assume there must be a way, rather than just opening the Alistair file and choosing the hairstyle and eyecolor files and such to apply to his file without actually *seeing* them.

These are two things I'm talking about. How do I edit Alistair's face in #1 instead of #2?

Thanks for your help! And again, I apologize for what might be a dumb or confusing question...

You need the blueprint file (mrh), not the exported version for the game (mor or mop). Here you can download the core and single player head morphs. :D Please note that the gen00fl_alistair.mrh will be write-protected. Therefore change the attribute before you open the file.
Everyone started as beginner. Dumb questions don´t exist. Have fun with the morphs...

All major NPCs (companions and others) also have a preset slider in the last tab of the morph editor that sets their facial structure. You just need to select the appropriate race/sex base head to start.

How do you remove write-protection from the .mrh file?

SO confused, sorry if the answer is obvious...

The OC source files are all read only. You need to change that in Windows Explorer. Select the root folder where you extracted the archive, right click and choose Properties. Uncheck Read Only and click the Apply button:

Hit OK when it asks to apply it to all sub-folders and files. You'll now be able to save the file in the toolset.

I did that but it still says it's Read Only when I open it up.

**EDIT**: Could this have something to do with the fact that I seem to have the Demo version of the Toolset?

No, you have not a demo version. The toolset starts with the module 'Demo tutorial'.
If you only want to to open a .mrh file, adjust and export as .mor or .mop file it will work as well. Except that it is the module´s override folder where you have to look for the exported resouce (Tools >> Export ->> Post to local)

If you want to open the Single Player Module with obviously much more resources in the palette (or create a new module)  switch to it via >> File >> Manage Modules >> Single Player.

Repeat what Darth has recommended or check the properties of the single file you want to change if the read-only attribute has been really removed.
