First, you don't need to be fighting reapers for the sidequest to be relevant to the plot. Second, he's not saying that a variety of sidequests is a bad thing, just that running around doing people's errands is not a good use of time.

According to the reviewer you do;

Why is Shepard therefore being asked to do fetch quests? If the Reapers win, everything is for naught, and the game would have felt a little more realistic and true to itself with more of a pinpoint focus on the Reapers only

For the 2nd question;

Why is Shepard therefore being asked to do fetch quests? If the Reapers win, everything is for naught, and the game would have felt a little more realistic and true to itself with more of a pinpoint focus on the Reapers only.

It sounds like he wants all the side quests involve nohing else but the reapers 24/7. Again, I could be wrong but that's the feel I got from reading his piece.

He sort of lumped them together. I don't think this is too spoilery but from what people have said the events from the Invasion comic are resolved somehow as a sidequest and not a main quest. That seems like a pretty relevant one. ME1 and too a less extent given the framing ME2 suffered from the same problem. It never really made sense for Shepard to explore the entire galaxy while chasing Saren across 5 planets. There are always going to be some stinketrs when you're setting them across a large area and have to make a lot. Deus Ex could make such good ones because the hub areas didn't all have to be different the same way. What would be nice to know is if there are chained sidequests like the Merc group/Virus ones from 2.

Thanks for the update. Some nice new footage to boot. Normandy looks pretty good, and so does the Citadel from the brief glimpse.

I will hold off my opinions on the side quests until I actually see them myself. Yes doing "fetch quests" while the Reapers dismantle the galaxy might seem silly but this has been a problem in video games (and specifically RPGs) more or less since day 1. It's a catch 22....without side quests games are a lot shorter, with them people ask "why concern myself with this petty stuff?".

And personally the main plot dealing with the Reapers, and then every side quest dealing with them too would be over kill. Realistic, yes, but over kill.

Imho the side quests shouldn't be only about the reapers... But the majority of them should have something to do with the lore, like adding more depth to the quarians, geth, drell or something in that direction. Making it 100 % about reapers and reaper threat ruins the ME series depth imho...

The reviewer raises a point about money... But, if i know my monetary history correctly no modern war has removed $$$ as a payment system... It usually creates heavy inflation which impacts in a blablbalblab way.

But adding inflation to ME3 series.... Please :D.

Calling them fetch quests is somewhat disingenuous though since they generally have such a negative perception in games. We're not really talking about finding another bottle of booze for Chakwas, it's about finding weapons stockpiles and artifacts that count as war assests in the fight. Some of them might be stinkers like the DA2 item quests but those were so small that they didn't really matter either way.

Just one man's thoughts.

RPGs always have the problem with sidequests, won't be too concern about it until I see it myself.

About the timing thing, I know none of us probably know the answer to this but did the reviewer do main missions while there were side quests sitting or just a sequence of side quests? I know in DA2 there were "timers" on the side quests that were specific to a given age in the game. In fact, there are a lot of RPGs that I can think of that would lock you out of some side quests if you progress the story too far.

I liked the Chakwas fetch quest though... It ends up with them having fun together. :) If fetch quests were like that then I wouldn't mind them so much.

On war assets and Exploration
Now, your focus apart from questing is on developing and retaining precious war assets while scanning the known galaxy's solar systems for a much more limited array of planets to land on, items to find and more.

Didn't notice this before. That's disappointing.

You can also do side quests for war assets.

Actually the even more limited planet amount is what I was talking about.

The Normandy is really quite dark this time around. I enjoyed the video.

I know its popular to hate on IGN, but the guy seems to be giving decently fair coverage. Is it biased? Yeah. Is he gushing? Some. Is he still providing actual information? Yep.

That last bit about side quests having a shelf life is very concerning. One thing I absolutely did not want in this game was an unspoken timer hanging over everything because of the invasion.

...Wouldn't that make sense though?

I don't understand the complaint about money. The galaxy is 100,000 light years across....not everyone is going to know, or care, about the Reaper threat. Or even understand the depth of the threat if they do hear about it. It's not as if everyone would stop using money.

All the disconnected loyalty missions killed the story's pacing in ME2, imo; given that the fetch quest element remains during a galaxy wide invasion really points to some seriously bad writing.

Really concerned now, after reading that......

I don't think side quests are exactly a huge problem, so long as you don't have to go waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of your way to do them. That would be just unrealistic.

The Gamestar review, which rated ME3 higher than 1 and 2, says that they really felt all of the side missions connected to the main plot more than ever before. Not sure what the IGN guy is talking about.

Sidequests that are 100% about the main plot would drag down the main plot itself and make it tiresome. The point of sidequests is to deviate a bit so things don't become repetitive.

it's nice to see the reputation bar is still confusing even to someone playing the game.
