So as mentioned in the title, there's no searching constantly for minerals on each world. However, according to this video from IGN (and before anyone makes a stupid "lol IGN" comment, this is footage from the actual game), we're using that stupid reticle to search worlds again. There's also a "find resources" scan mid-system that fills up a "Reaper Alertness" meter with each use. If you fill that up, it activates what might laughingly be called a "vehicle" section -- driving the Normandy around on the map to get to the mass relay before one of the Reapers catches you. Just...watch the video.

No, I'm not doing an idiotic "preorder cancelled!" thing, but this looks every bit as lame as the ME2 version, if perhaps slightly less tedious. I wanted exploration to find war assets, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind. <_<

... ME1's may not have be the most functional-mako controls grrr-... but the whole probe the planet and get little chunks of resources is frankly lame!

I'd take dukes of hazzarding around in the Mako then Scan, Fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe, Scan, fire a probe -rambles on-

Probably the best choice from a limited list of options.
... it could have been worse.

I actually like this system better than ME1 and ME2.

I'm sure you can still explore to find some War Assets, but given just how many of them there are, this makes the most sense.

Well, it could be worse.

What happens if the reapers catch you?

Yeah, I liked all the side missions that came with landing on a planet. Raiding Blue Suns bases, rescuing a Quarian from a swarm of varren and boarding ships. I hope they don't take out those side missions.

While I agree that it could have been worse, it's still rather sad. I was hoping for at least some kind of flyover where we'd get a bit of landscape, or a touch of dogfighting or something more than just "radar ping until you run from Reapers." Frankly, to me this looks like padding with an attempt at looking like they're throwing a bone to the exploration contingent.

Don't know, but I get the impression that it's insta-death. I mean, sure, Joker is awesome and the Normandy's powerful, but one-on-one against a Reaper? Um, no.

Edit: further commentary...

To be fair, I'm pretty sure I remember an interview where the devs said you could find those kinds of side missions this way.

What is wrong with this? This is good. I like this new system. I just hope we can still land on planets to do side missions.

Can't say that I'm displeased with this, but it's not really spectacular, either. Although I'm very glad we don't have to scan planets for minerals like in ME2 anymore.

There is nothing wrong with this new system... IF we could land on a planet.

Well there is still N7 missions in the game and unless N7 missions have been changed from ME2, we will still be able to go on planets to do side missions.

Yeah, but I will miss Tricia Elfer's voice while doing this, it was so relaxing (and the Uranus thing was priceless).

Streamlined a feature everyone hated, I don't blame them.

Having to land to acquire every war asset would be an annoying feature all its own. Without any confirmed vehicle use an ME1 exploration wouldn't work either.

They went the middle route and its an alright system, not great but not bad.

Any answer anyone gave you would just be a guess.

Terrible, I'm not going to cancel over something small but I will say I'm disappointed. Bioware said they were going away from the scan planet thing from 2 but this seems almost nearly identical like the OP said.

I want to explore planets in a vehicle and see cool new enviroments. Not spam a scan pulse to find some stuff to scan and get chased by mini reapers to a relay. Completely terrible.

Actually it's not.
The previous planet scanning for resources meant you'd drag your cursor all around the planet to find resources, not really knowing where you'd find them.
Now you ping places of interest on the galaxy map (no more going around to every planet) and for planets you are directed towards your goal.
All in all that's a lot less hassle and should make it quite a bit easier and less taxing.

I never found the planet scanning terrible, but it was very tedious. This seems to have fixed that.

I like it.

I'm more confused about how people could want a return to ME1-style exploration. Aside from a couple of planets, nothing was really unique.

This is a lot like ME 1's system. If you recall in ME 1 most planets you went up to it would pull up flavor text about the planet and sometimes you could investigate and get resources, salarian tags, turian colony flags, or matriarch writings. Other times you were able to land on the planet with the Mako and explore it more "freely" by driving around finding the nods and other various things. This takes out having to visit individual planets like you had to do in ME 1 for the pinging option which allows you to scan areas. I am sure there will be side missions on some planets where you can land and do stuff (though there won't be the hassle/joy of driving the Mako ala ME 1 but probably the mission type structure of ME 2).
