So what do you guys think the reason is?
Clearly it's stupidity on the part of people who don't understand the difference between an entitlement and a punishment.
How is it an entitlement for to ask for something you worked for?
en·ti·tle·ment[/i]/enˈtītlmənt/Noun:
The fact of having a right to something. The amount to which a person has a right.Synonyms:right - title - warrant
Would you be cool with it Bioware decided not to roll over your ME2 character to ME3. No because you just assumed it would roll over. I never read a bioware press release saying we couldn't prior to the demo. If there was one they tucked it in a corner.
Except that technically, you don't have a "right" to the game or anything in it. That is the property of others who let you purchase user rights that allow you to use the software under the terms they set for your use. This is what the little agreement thing you have to check before you install means. In this case, they have deemed that you only have the right to create and play during the demo run, and they will wipe those characters and stats and everyone will start over when the actual game releases. It doesn't matter how many hours you spent playing, when you checked "I agree" under the terms of use agreement, you agreed to the terms the owners of the software set for its use before they ever let it install. In this case, you agreed that your characters and stats would not carry over. Those are your "rights" and that's all you're entitled to. And, most companies also write in clauses allowing them to change the terms of use without notice, too. So, you could wake tomorrow and find all the servers shut down and all the characters gone even though it has been previously stated that they wouldn't shut the mp demo down until March 2.
So, stop complaining and be happy with what you have. It's not like you paid for it.
Good summary but here's a question I pose to you, do you own your saves?
Maybe if they're on your computer, but since they won't work without compatibility to the software itself, good luck; I wish you much joy of them. I have my ME1 saves tucked away on my computer, but they don't do anything without either ME1, ME2, or soon, ME3 installed on my computer, and I can't install and run those games without agreeing to BioWare's terms of use and service.
And MP and MMOs function differently than singleplayer games for the most part. The saves for those are not kept in your home computer but on a hosted server. All you have on your machine is the client that allows you to communicate with the hosting servers, and if you think for a second about the competitive nature of such games you'll see why. If you kept your own saves on your own machine, it would be far too easy to tamper with your save files and potentially gain advantage that you hadn't earned through play (i.e. hack them). That's why there will be an option to transfer characters to the singleplayer game, at that point, they DO become part your computer save file, but you no longer have access to them in MP.
So, I'm sorry if you feel that you have some kind of nebulous "right" to keep these characters, but they don't even exist on your machine, and if they do, they're no good to you without the proprietary software and hosting servers of BioWare whose terms and conditions you must agree to first before anything else. And in this case, they have not given you the right to use these particular characters at any time beyond March 2 or March 5 (I've heard two dates for demo cut-off). My advice to you is to stop playing MP because it's clearly just a waste for you until the main game releases.
