I didn't put any fitness in my Vanguard Drell and I really regret it. He dies so quickly.

You might well have made the right choice given his appauling base shield rating.
I think drell vanguard's fragility is something you simply have to accept and work around, rather than wasting points on trying to ineffectively compensate for it.

Maybe. Could be that I am just no good at the class.

Having turian sentinel maxed out fitness is quite useful as extra shield help a lot.

With the way I'm playing my Drell Vanguard, I'm finding it extraordinarily necessary. Thing is, I'm either pulling someone every half a second thanks to my cooldown, or doing that and then Charging to the people I can't pull. That half a second or so of drawback from them tends to give me time to melee them (I carry a pistol. VERY rarely do I even use it, I'm melee/powers only - only carry the pistol because I have to) - and my roundhouse kick tends to hit VERY hard thanks to my fitness. And afterwards, thanks to my choices in the fitness tree, I hit what..75% harder?
Honestly, it depends on your playstyle. And as long as my team is aware of what I'm doing, we do fine in gold/silver. It's pretty cool.
But for my infiltrator, nah, I only took some of it before I maxed.
