They should get timer to it, agreed.

Which they should be doing before the queue up. So yes, timer is ideal.Arppis wrote...
Naw, you aren't being impatient. Some people take ages to make their characters pwetty and adjust their weapon just the right way.

A countdown would help, maybe something like 20 seconds before the game starts when all players but the last person is ready.

Maybe even a red flash on the person's screen every time a kick is called for.vGriMz wrote...

If you're adding ammo powers or what have you, that's fine. If you're with the same team from a previous round, that's fine. But if you're hitting Quick Play before customizing your weapons and powers, you are wasting other people's time.PurebredCorn wrote...
Taking more than a few minutes is taking too long, but some people also are way too impatient and start voting to kick people after about 20 seconds and that's lame too.

All of this.
I've also had rounds where I'm ready and waiting for a bit for everyone to get ready. Then everyone is finally is ready and there is one person not ready, everyone waits some more and the person leaves, putting you in the match with a short team.

1 minute is ideal. In 20 seconds you don't have enough time to do all the things you might need to.

1) When you level up, the worst thing you can do is "Auto level", and sometimes you need to read what the ability does before you commit.
2) Buying packs and seeing what you've got is also something that really can't be done in 20 seconds, not properly anyway.
3) Kitting out equipment is a big deal, can't be done in 20 seconds.
I think 1 minute - that's 20 seconds for each of the above - is fine. And I deliberate quite a bit.
N.B - changing character appearance doesn't take you out of "ready" status, and changes aren't applied until you hit "Back". If the game starts before you hit "Back", then you go into the game looking the way you did before you started fiddling.

Really,so far VoIP is the only means and many people don't respond and/or block voice from other players. Text chat makes a great start.
