As long as that doesn't mean you enter Prestige..

Well it does reset that class to level 1 .... Youg et to keep the charachters/weapons but you have to rename them and start them at level 1 again :/

Promoting a character gives you 10 points towards your war assets, not galactic readiness.

Not true. The only thing that happens is the race is reset to level one experience. I've promoted multiple races and still have them all unlocked should I want to build them again.

The advantage seems to be that unlike readiness, the war assets are permanent and won't decrease over time if you get bored with MP or get high and wonder off somewhere. Promote enough of them and you'll be able to come back to the SP any time you want and not have to worry too much about squeezing out every point or coming back to MP to get the "good" ending.

Of course if you're regularly pumping out level 20 characters (enough to make a significant impact on the SP), chances are you probably like the MP and wouldn't mind if you had to play a few more of them when you came back to the game to get your readiness up and make up for any deficit in your total score. So I guess the gain is kind of limited, but has some value at least. I like variety in multi-player so I can see me using it at some point when I'm bored of a certain character.

@Dude: You can't. You upgrade them all from the one class: all characters of the same class level up at the same time (eg. Your level 13 Asari Adept is the same level as your Human Adept, even if you've never played as the human).

No problem. I even edited my response to clarify that you can't promote one character out of the class. You have to promote the entire class, all four races; five if you have Battlefield 3 and are promoting solider.
And also, to clear up some more questions people had, you get to keep the race unlocks and all the weapons you've unlocked. So restarting at level one, you can still be a Krogen with that Falcon X you've unlocked. (Though I can't seem to get my hands on a descent sniper rifle.)

I promoted my engineer class last night..both my Quarian and Salarian characters reset to level 1 but my two human characters retained all their skills and for some reason have negative skill points to use...has this happened to anyone?
