Wait. Balak was the Big baddie, right? Wasn't there another one that was following orders? Wouldn't it make sense to have *that* Batarian back and not that remorseless ass*hole?

Indeed loads and loads of old characters show up if you spared them in Mass Effect.

Agh. Agh. Agh.

Should have known the default choice wasn't the best one. Just after I finished my final runthrough of ME2 today too Posted Image

Must not be a perfectionist. Must not replay ME1 again just for one extra encounter. Must not. No.

So this is just if you let him live via the paragon choice, right? If you sacrifced the hostages but kept him alive he doesn't appear?

It's so dumb it's actually funny. Anyway, Balak is one of my favorite characters. Though I'm sure ME3 is working in overdrive to ruin him.

Here's an old post I made about him:

I would like to discuss Balak.

What are your impressions of him?

Is he a madman? A hero? A victim?

For my part he's clearly a madman, but a tragic one. His motivations are the key. I think that Balak is possibly motivated by grief. One thing I am certain of though is that he was not always a violent and hateful person. The Alliance's conflict with the batarians must have hurt Balak in a very personal way.

The evidence for this is in his refusal to take responsibility for anything he's done. When Shepard first confronts him Balak defends himself by pointing out how the Alliance pushed the batarians out. To him this is just righteous retribution for what humanity did to his people. Finally, if you attack him, Balak accuses Shepard of killing the hostages.

Balak said...

I gave you the chance to save them and you threw it away!

Who's the real terrorist here?

This reaction in particular says a lot about him. From his perspective it wasn't him who attacked X571, it wasn't him who killed the hostages. The real perpetrator of these heinous acts was the Systems Alliance. Yes, heinous. Deep down Balak does think what he has done is wrong and or else he wouldn't be so eager to shift the responsibility for it onto Shepard. He is most certainly a shell of his former self, blinded and fueled by anger and pain.

Apparently Balak was never really a terrorist and was actually an agent for the Batarian Hegemony, or so I'veheard. After all when Shepherd asked him who's he working for he was somewhat defensive.

If anything he should have ended up a commander.
