If you have the precision upgrade for the shotgun it becomes also a good weapon at mid range. In case of the free ability use while cloaked: on an salarian infiltrator it's just awesome as he has energy drain which, used on an shielded enemy, restores your own shields to some extend. So you can stealth if pressured to much an reload some of your shields on an suitable enemy while staying cloaked.

I had a silver match today where I tool a Phalanx by error and no sniper rifle. I rocked faces with it. Instead of sitting back and sniping, I was zipping over the map and picking off targets in relatively close quarters.

Nonetheless, I'll definitely go back to sniper rifles. If I want to get close and heavy, I'll take my Vanguard.

It helps about 40%

It helps 0% because your damage can't exceed the shield on an enemy's health as implemented on gold.  If you played gold and used a widow you would know that, so obviously you are a troll playing on bronze or silver.

Widow is great for scrub difficulties.

As an added bonus, find a mob that has 1 bar of shield. and try to headshot kill him with a widow as an infiltrator out of cloak.

I use the viper, even on gold. Finished gold several times now, btw. Using a widow on shields and barriers is your own fault because it's the guns biggest weakness.

The time you try to kill a Nemesis with the widow(!) and reload your gun, I have already killed it with the viper. Not in one shot, of course. It's not the pure damage that counts. As a sniper you have all the time you need and the distance. And the can kill pretty fast. 
Not to mention that I did a mistake on my infiltrator and haven't even activted the 40% damage camo sniper boost...

Viper is a really solid sniper rifle for gold, and probably justifies the 40% damage talent.  Good choice.  I'd much prefer that over a widow on gold.
