So, after some digging around, I found out that From Ashes is the DLC mission encorporated with the N7 Edition, while also being a Day 1 DLC (i've boycotted the SP area of the forums since the leaks started coming in, so excuse my lateness).
It has also been seen that this has caused uproar among fans, even going so far as to reach News status on some gaming sites.
Yet... this has happened, in the EXACT SAME FASHION, before!

Mass Effect 2 had The Price of Revenge: another Day 1 DLC encorporated with ME2's Collector Edition. It introduced a new squadmate: Zaeed Massani, from the get-go; had a bit of backstory set on Zorya, and provided some insight into the Blue Suns; and brought a new toy: The Firestorm Heavy Weapon, into the fray.

Now to compare with From Ashes.
Ashes introduces a new squadmate, currently known only as "The Prothean", "Prothy", or in some cases, "Blood Diamond" (as a satirical reference to his accent), presumably from the get-go too. It will most likely provide some backstory into the Protheans, set on our old friend Eden Prime. Lastly, it also brings a new toy to the fight: an Assualt Rifle or Heavy Weapon known only as the Particle Beam (no further name given).

I don't recall so much uproar regarding The Price of Revenge; so why target From Ashes when it is, fundamentally, the same?

From Ashes is likely (it was leaked) as a payed for dlc, costing 10 dollars if you do not have the collector's edition.

Yes, that is the difference. The Cerberus network gave you multiple DLC packs for free. It came with every new copy of the game, CE or SE.

From Ashes only comes with the CE. Everyone else has to pay.

To the above poster, it's not a leak. It's been officially announced.

Zaeed was just another human, and he was free with the online pass that came with all new copies.  Prothy the Prothean is a freaking Prothean, the greatest enigma in the Mass Effect universe, and he's only available as a permanent squadmate* with From Ashes, which costs $10 or comes with the Collector's Edition.

This caused many fans to become angered because they didn't understand that the content in From Ashes was created after Mass Effect 3 entered the testing and manufacturing stage of production.  If From Ashles was not sold, it would not be created.  If it were not created, in addition to never having Prothy as a permanent squadmate* the team who created it would have nothing to do and likely be out of a job for a while.  It has to be paid DLC because the online pass already covers multiplayer, so there's no money from EA there to pay for it.

*People are speculating that Prothy or at least another Prothean will appear sometime in the story before From Ashes becomes available. So the DLC may not be an essential part of the story.

Zaeed actually came free with every new copy of the standard edition of ME 2. If you have bought the standard edition of ME 3, you'll have to purchase From the Ashes when it is released on launch day. Aside from that, I think the idea of a Prothean being restricted to DLC (that you have to pay extra for) has ruffled some feathers.

Yet TPOR required the Cerberus Network to be downloaded. If you didn't get that from a new game, it too cost 10 dollars.
While I can understand the whole "Paid-for" deal; I think a lot of people are getting over-worked up about this whole thing. A non-obligitory DLC shouldn't cause mass-hysteria.

The price of revenge was free for any copy of the game bought new to counter used sales. This is only for CE edition. I'm not arguing either way but there it is.

The actual comparison is to The Exiled Prince, which only came free with the CE of DA2.

But the price of revenge was free. Is From Ashes free?

The function of TPOR was to discourage buying used copies, which many consider acceptable.

The function of a paid for launch dlc is to milk money.

I see. Like I said before, i'm haven't been exactly on top of things lately (the only Mass Effect-related thing i've looked at since last Sunday was the Space Editions). I wasn't aware that From Ashes was a Paid-for-DLC, but I stand by my opinion that the general reaction has been too rash.
