Is any explanation given on what the secret mission the Grey Wardens were on in Act II? Im looking and I cant find anything.

Hawke isn't a grey warden, so he isn't privy to the secrets we the gamers once had. Smart move on Bioware's part.

Now we get to see how the Warden's operate without seeing what they're doing or why they do it, so we lose the perspective that our individual Warden's had. Makes it easier to judge the Wardens.

I'm tempted to tie it in to the things going on in the Legacy DLC, with the investigating Wardens having the misfortune of arriving in Kirkwall just as the Qunari uprising was underway.

 I always thought it had something to do with Legacy, but the cheese wheel idea makes more sense

I always assumed they were looking for the sword the lost dwarves also went to find - the one that you already found as an idol.

i always assumed it had something to do with the hero of fereldon going missing, like there looking for him or something along thoughs lines.

they was hunting for my Warden after she used Blood Magic to turn her self into a Blood Goddess and decided that she wanted to rule the world ...

They were actually just on their way to Grey Warden poker night. They just tell you they're on an important mission because you're not part of their super-secret club.
