Just calm down for a sec. Ask yourself: "What's the difference between ME1 and ME2 resource gathering?"

Do it.

One required an annoying time-based mini-game (planetside anyway)

The other required a tedious scanning procedure.

Neither are very good.

You missed the big difference. ME2 minerals are useful, but ME1 minerals are not useful past the very early game, since  you're getting so many random items on missions that you make more money by avoiding exploration

Haha,

Chris is awesome... Anyways planet scanning wasn't even that bad in ME 2 (probably helps that I would crank up the mouse DPI to 5600) and it looks like alot will change in ME 3.

True, but I feel that ME1's mineral quests made them an obligatory mandatory

So ... is there actually evidence that there is no ME1-style planet exploration,or is everything just speculation?

It's just that the video looks like the ME3 implementation. It's conceivable that we could still be landing on ME1-style planets, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Snap judgments on incomplete information is the only reason anyone would preorder a game.

While I see it as an improvement I still don't think it looks that well done. Having an arbitrary number of scans before the reapers come either rewards luck if the number is tight, or a methodical approach if you have enough scans. Either way seems pretty average design to me. It should have been designed to be a puzzle but it just seems more like a process. This is one way I think the scanning mini-game could have worked.

In systems where there is a reaper presence, the reaper or reapers should have been on "patrol" in the system from the start. If you get too close to one it becomes aware of you. The majority of anomalies should be revealed at the start, the "challenge" is to work out how to get to them rather than locate them. Additionally there should be a time limit where additional reapers will enter the system to get you to hurry up. I would also love to see things like gravity slingshots around planets or the ability to lose the reapers somehow possibly in asteroid fields or have ship upgrades to help. Conceptually I think this was a good idea but the implementation seems uninspired to me.

The lack of mineral collecting is nice, but the whole "oh no the Reapers found you" mechanic is just dumb, especially since it can prevent you from doing any missions in that system until you go play another mission.

So do the mission first, then scan.

Those sound like interesting ideas, Malanek. Note that there is a rumor that the placement of scanable items will be randomized. If true that would make a puzzle harder to implement.

Or maybe we just want to get the CE.

It wouldn't even make sense to land on several planets and explore it while elsewhere the Reapers are attacking... I mean it's practically War.

But I hope that it's more than game over when the reapers get's you while scanning planets etc.

I wouldn't mind some planet exploration.

But I don't mind it being snapped.

@teh_619:

You do realize that to do what they did in ME 1 with proper level design takes a whole lot of time.
They have to make proper textures with variation and decals so the terrain doesn't look copy-paste. They have to place a load of objects to make the planets come to live.
They have to fit all of that in and around mission objectives and points of interest and than make sure that map isn't broken, has terrain faults (odd collisions or places where you get stuck/fall through).

At best they could make two or three and for that you could have probably double ME 2 style missions, with better polish.
Since this isn't the focus of the game, that's not really what they are looking to spend time on.

Looks far more better & interesting than ME2 planet scanning, that's for sure. Also the reapers chasing you was pretty funny.

I find all this rather amusing as my father is one that used to take soil samples, and I had to spend many a Summer helping him. And both ME1 and ME2 were amazingly refreshing compared to the reality; even demonstrated ME2 for my Dad one day on a visit.

Hope the new version has some of those quest perks for planet investigations, as well as more stuff to aquire for gaining excess materials. After all, Min-er-al puppies, at heart....

Hahaha damn, there was an "Oh snap" heard somewhere because of that.

Anyway planet scanning is fine now even if half-assed.  I'll still pointlessly hoping for land exploration but that is almost certainly gone.  I just wish Bioware would have given a straight-up answer about vehicles long ago instead of stringing people along and furthering a sore point.

Compared to ME1 the firewalker pack was very linear (not a bad thing). Overlord is what I would want to see with exploration though.

Well, that's a snap judgment on incomplete information.

They were selling out at many retailers and I wanted the DLC guns.

I was hoping they would've made a bold move and removed scanning altogether. I'm also of the opinion that flying the toy Normandy around seems silly, like I'm playing a kid's board game. And now it seems we do twice the scanning. It's true, flipping through planets like I'm perusing an encyclopedia wasn't much better in ME1, but Bioware seems incredibly reluctant to get rid of a mechanic that is not only a blatant time sink but requires zero brain power.

I'm not saying it was the wrong decision, for you at least..  Just one made on incomplete information.
