On my current DAO playthrough i've pieced together my future party: Alistair (tank), Wynne (healer), me (double-dagger dps) and placeholder. So does anybody know a good DPS companion that could hit this role.

You say you're a double-dagger DPS. Does that mean you're a rogue? If not, you probably will want one. Rogues are pretty useful for traps, chests, etc. And that means Leliana (archer build). She's available sooner than Zevran, far more competent with traps and locks, and will dish out better DPS since the AI is too dumb to work out how to use DW rogues like Zevran effectively.

If you are a rogue, however, then you have lots of options. Lel is still a viable option. Also, Morrigan can easily be built as a nuker, and a nuker mage is arguably the biggest powerhouse in the game. Just pump her primal spells (especially fire and ice lines). Alistair can take a few hits if he gets caught by firendly fire, and there's Wynne to keep him alive anyway. You might want to place the AOEs yourself though - again that's best not left to the intelligence of the AI. Then have yourself and Alistair on mop-up duty.

Sten is certainly powerful, but tends to be rather fragile, at least at for the first few missions. He'll die a lot early on. Oghren is basically the same, though you probably won't get him til later when it's stopped being a notable problem.

My favourite however is a DPS-build Shale. Both a powerful fighter and a hilarious companion. Just rack up the strength, with as much constitution as needed to equip your best crystals, and get the top (orange) skill line and you're sorted. Don't forget to swap around the crystals to maximise on enemy weaknesses and neutralise their attacks. Shale is also immune to Overwhelms and grabs, so perfect for fighting dragons and monsters.

Morrigan can do a lot of damage and help with crowd control which your party needs.
