Am I missing something here or are SMGs just horrible?
Am I using the SMG wrong?

So in ME2, my go to weapon against shields was SMG. However, they don't do any significant damage against shields or any damage at all! I first tried the SMG scope but that basically makes the gun unusable. Changing to normal aim or shooting from the hip and had basically the same effect. I have tried using the Hornet, Tempest, and the Shuriken (that is all I have), and now I don't even bother using an SMG. The Predator does more damage against shields!

SMGs are pretty awful. I dropped them in favor of the heavy pistol for my Adept and got a lot more kills.

I use a scoped Locust on my engineer as my only weapon, it's pretty good and doesn't weigh a lot, handy since I use powers for most things.. It's also full auto, I don't really like the burst smg's.

When I first started playing my salarian engineer I used a Mantis and Tempest. Never had a problem with it, very effective at close range, moderately effective at medium. They are not supposed to be as good as ARs the trade off is weight.

I find the starter SMG is decent for it's weight and is fairly accurate, but the heavy pistol is undoubtedly better, so go with that, and choose a second, heavier weapon when you have the spare weight.

SMGs are awful at any kind of range except point blank.
Point blank headshots work for me though. I was killing just as fast or faster than I did with my shotgun.
Then again due to the insanely annoying unlock system I am still missing some of the weapons.

A max ranked Tempest outfitted with larger clip and improved heat sinks holds 90 rounds and can effectively shoot non-stop for almost a minute. It is useful for keeping Phantoms in a defensive stance, or for burning someone down at point blank range.
The Hornet is the most ridiculous smg. It's heavy, and although it's first bullet is supposed to be accurate at long range, the kick back makes it impossible for any of the other bullets in it's burst to hit anything.

I was indeed using a Tempest with a larger clip and exclusively at point blank aiming for the head. Due to time constraints I have not unlocked a lot of other upgrades though.
The Tempest definitely works at least. I admit I don't have the experience yet to say exactly how good or bad it is. But I didn't have any trouble when I used it.
There is another advantage. It weighs much less than a shotgun. You can even carry a pistol then for those times when your vanguard has to sit and "hack" while all the enemies are unchargeable and miles away.

The Tempest was my favorite wep in ME2 but so far all the SMG's in ME3 seem to be useless unless it's point blank range.

Seems like anything the SMG can do the Pistol can do better.

The Locust works wonders, but the other SMGs are pretty much only good for taking out shields. If you carry one weapon, it should just be the Avenger over an SMG.

The locust really really sucks. It's almost as if they decided that just the accuracy was enough and cut the damage to 1/4. Honestly, the Shuriken is probably the best SMG in the game right now since it has an amazing rate of fire and capacity, and the consistent hits make for pretty great damage.

Tempest can be used as a sneak-up-then-empty-the-clip-in-the-chest weapon, but other than that, it's not really useful. At least for my playstyle, if I want to have a low weight, fast firing weapon, I usually take the Predator instead.

SMGs need a buff no doubt

I tried the Hornet just to spice things up with my Engineer; an experience I would care to never endure again. The recoil makes SMGs curve upward after firing much more egregiously than in ME2 and the damage is notably inferior to the Phalanx. There really is no reason to even glance at SMGs right now.

It seems that weapon effectiveness against different defense types has been forsaken.
From what I can gather the defense damage modifiers are gone, making all weapons as powerful and useful as their DAM and DPS against everything.
It's a shame since it was a great way of balancing weapons.

With the low weight of maxed assault rifles, smgs are useless imho. might as well equip a avenger x or a mattock x instead.

Don't discount the value of a high ammo count close quarters weapon.
The tempest can hold several phantoms off, and once you combine that with power spam you can go on the offensive.
The low weight makes it great to pair with a heavy pistol. Once you have upgraded versions, there no reason to ever run with just a pistol. You can pair your heavy pistol to any SMG without slowing your power spam down, and the time it takes to swap weapons depends on the size of that weapon (meaning going from pistol to smg is less than a second).
I love heavy pistols as much as anyone else, but on gold when there are 4 phantoms coming at us from one direction and the team is tied up in the other direction with multiple atlas with engineers + centurions I feel a LOT more comfortable swapping over to my tempest. Combined with my overload spam and drone I can actually drive those phantoms back on my own, leaving the rest of my squad to tackle the other side without wasting our heavy weapons ammunition.
On bronze, you don't need to even care about weapon selection.
On silver, you can still single head-shot most enemies with an upgraded carnifex, and have more than enough rockets to deal with the later waves.
On gold, there is a lot more reason to bring more weapons of different types. You'll run into situations in the early waves that most players on silver just nuke with heavy weapons, and when you are trying to hold off multiple phantoms with a heavy pistol, you will get people killed having to reload far too often for a holdout weapon.

Katana X and human adept biotics....I can spend 2 seconds killing the enemy, or use the smg and spend several more seconds waiting for the Cerberus flackie to go down.
