I know it has something to do with the Protheans and possibly part of TIM's plan

Expect to see spoilers, in the spoiler section..
Seriously.

The Crucible is meant to evoke an enormus, rocket-propelled bomb: something like a cross between the Trinity bomb and NASA space probe.
Then it goes on to show pictures.

Being in a place for spoilers, one may still wish to pick and choose which.
It's absurd to suggest that someone wishing to discuss gameplay spoilers on X mission should be readily exposed to spoilers on Y mission.

Doesn't mean they have to go digging into a spoiler they don't want to hear about.
They could just look at the title and say to themselves "Oh look, there's something called the 'Crucible'. I'll find out what that is later when the game comes out".

It's both, really. A bomb conveniently discovered on Mars (left by the Deus Ex Machina race the Protheans, possibly handed down to them from the previous cycle) that has the potential to end the Reaper threat, but we need to rush about the galaxy to get ready to use it on the big bads.

It's that wierd shaped 'thing' on the main menu of the demo.
