Pure speculation here; wanted to get peoples' impressions. I never play pure paragon/renegade, but I get a strong impression that there will be no "perfect ending" in ME3. That it will not be possible to save everyone. Realistically, it wouldn't.

From the demo and all advertising thus far, it looks like most of the game will be spent recruiting allies among the various races of the galaxy in preparation for a counterattack against the Reapers while they're still in the Sol system. Problem being, the longer you spend running around fixing everyone else's problems and putting together a fleet, the greater the devastation would be on Earth by the time everyone finally gets there. Conceivably, Earth could be gone by the time you've banded together everyone else, meaning you would have to pick and choose your allies to have any hope of sparing humanity - while bearing in mind that not recruiting enough allies in favor of saving time will mean bringing a weaker fleet to bear, potentially devastating the allies you do choose to lean on. Maybe those who you don't recruit are more likely to be wiped out by the Reapers - or maybe they're spared entirely, leaving them stronger in the aftermath. You would have to find some kind of balance, and it would encourage players to recruit different allies for different playthroughs to see how it all turns out.

I think this would be a clever design - it would ensure that every playthrough has a different ending, leaving the races of the galaxy in a different state when the dust finally settles. I myself am anticipating a "Lord of the Rings" ending, where you take some time to find out how everyone else held up after the final battle. Your actions in choosing allies and manipulating their relationships with each other beforehand would have a huge effect on such an ending. I wouldn't think it would be too awfully resource-intensive to have branching "epilogues" for each race.

For example, perhaps if the Rachni were spared and Wrex did not survive, the Krogan go to war with the Rachni. If the Rachni were wiped out, maybe the Krogan instead go to war with what's left of the Turian Hierarchy or the Salarians in retaliation for the Genophage. Maybe the Quarian Flotilla is destroyed, maybe they make peace with the Geth and reclaim their homeworld, maybe they retake control of the Geth via Admiral Xen's research and become one of the most powerful factions in the galaxy overnight, having fought the Reapers entirely by proxy (Really, they don't have that many people left to lose). Maybe the Geth were less than honest about their intentions, luring them in with peace talks only to wipe them out - if you destroy the Heretic base in ME2, and actually listen to what Shepard tells Legion as a justification for it, that same logic could be applied by the Geth to justify finishing the genocide they committed against their creators in retaliation for the Quarians' attempt at the same.

There would be all different kinds of outcomes possible if Bioware shunned the "perfect ending," and it would encourage multiple play-throughs. I'm interested to see what they actually did.

I like the concept of having to manage your time with recruiting allies, mainly because it's realistic. However, I know that I would absolutely hate to play a game with a time limit; timed missions are right up there with escort missions on my list of gameplay ideas I hate, so a whole game with a time limit would make me cringe. I know it could be done correctly, (it can't be impossible can it?) but I know it would really diminish my enjoyment of the game

Same, if there is somekind of idiotic time limit, I have to admit, I would be dissapointed in this game.

I disliked it in between IFF mission and Collector Base too. Not to mention, it wasn't even mentioned anywhere and there hasn't been proper time limit in any other mission like that.

Simply put. Time limits would just ruin the game for me. I don't find it enjoyable if I have to skip everything and run around like headless chicken. It would just do disservice to the game.

However, if someone enjoys this stuff, I wish there was some "hardcore" mode for those.

In reality, shouldn't the reapers wipe everyone out. We run off of their technology and have some information about them but to what extent does their technology go. They are completely logic based from what Sovereign tells us. They may be far more advanced than we can comprehend. It might disappoint players but everything suggests it should be this way. If this did happen, they can also keep the game alive. I will honestly be depressed if Shepard comes out on top because its what a good majority expect I'm sure.

Actually, Dead Rising 1+2 handled time management pretty well. Then again, those games were meant to be expanded upon with each following play through.

In terms of Mass Effect though.... No time limits, please. No escort missions either.

I dislike both sides really. I dislike the thought of having a perfect ending with every race surviving, but I also loathe the idea of Reapers being invincible. Everything has weaknesses, unless they are Gods, and weaknesses can be exploited.   I don't want it to be easy, I don't want to win perfectly, but neither do I want a complete loss either.

As for time limits, I don't like those either. I can be fine with escort missions, but sometimes it is very frustrating.

I agree they are not invincible but the reality that every race could succeed against them doesn't seem plausible now. Where is the line drawn between us winning vs. reapers winning? Is there a middle ground? Unless they compromise to live together I don't see it and I can't consider it an outcome.

The reason we have a chance is because of the Protheans. If it wasn't for them everyone on the Citadel would be dead and all the relays would be shut downed.

This is why the current species in the galaxy actually have a chance.

True, but why wouldn't they just hit the citadel first and be back on plan. And, even though the relays would be open I'd imagine more of a run but you can't hide situation. Though, more support could travel through the relays as well. The reapers are very technologically advanced I'd assume, so for them to rely on just the citadel relay and shutoff there seems more like a design flaw from the creators. The fact that the only switch is on the citadel is bad design not by the reapers but by Bioware/EA

I hated the time limit on ME2, where you could only do 2 missions after getting legion for the collector attack and then after your crew is abducted if you didn't go immediately you would loose crew members, booo. Couln't take legion for other missions other than his own :(.

Technically the rest of the galaxy has a fighting chance. Remember what Virgil said, the 50,000 year countdown had already past before the humans found the Mars ruins, but that dosn't matter. The only reason the Reapers are attacking earth first is because Humans stopped them two times already. The first time they killed a reaper. The second time they killed the Reapers best asset (the collectors) and stopped them from building a new Reaper. They're going for the bigger threat first, because the rest of the galaxy dosn't beleive they exist. None of the ships besides the Normandy got off of Earth. They were gonna black bag the Earth then attack the citadel before anyone knew what was happening.

Technically the rest of the galaxy has a fighting chance now, remember that Virgil said the 50,000 year countdown had already happened before the humans found the ruins on Mars. The rachni were the Reapers way of trying to act indirectly. The reason the Earth is under attack is because the Reapers are getting rid of the biggest threat first. A single human stopped the Reapers plans twice now. The first time Shepard even killed one of the Reapers which was suppost to be impossible to do at our technological level. The second time Shepard not only killed the Reapers best agents (the collectors) he/she stopped them from creating a new Reaper. The Reaapers were trying to 'black bag' the Earth. attack there, kill everyone, and then Attack the rest of the galaxy before anyone knew what was happening. Remember, the rest of the galaxy dosn't beleive the Reapers even exist, The Normandy is the only reason the Council will know about the REaper attack because no other ship makes it off of Earth during the attack.
