When I was setting up my penultimate save, I really wanted to select the "ruthless" background for my paragon.  Now, I did want the paragon point bonuses, but I've always thought that the "spacer" and "war hero" backgrounds, when combined, made for a very cliche story.  However, I eventually decided against it because at several points throughout the game, characters kept referring to how I slaughtered surrendering Batarians.  I tried to brush that off, saying that it was the "fog of war" and that the public reports about what really happened had it wrong, but I never got the choice to have my Shepard deny those accusations.

So I'm just curious.  Does anybody play as a "ruthless" paragon?  How did you deal with and/or justify what happened on Torfan?

I always play Paragon when I pick Ruthless. I like the idea that Shepard is trying to atone for what s/he did on Torfan by changing their life and working hard to become a good person.

My current FemShep has the Colonist+Ruthless background.  Played more of a Paragade then pure paragon to 'atone', chalked it up to that she regrets doing it but that a message had to be sent to Batarian slavers

I never picked it up as it didn't really fit to my character. But that's interesting. :)

I went for Earthborn, he was part of gang before joining military. He basicaly wanted to escape that misseable life. Basicaly he wanted to make a diffirence and atone for horrible things he did as gang member, not to mention make sure that people don't end up like he did.

So yeah also picked war hero.

I played as a Shepard that suffered brain-damage and a personality shift between ME1 and ME2, despite the Illusive Man's want to keep Shepard's personality intact. He was a Ruthless Renegade bastard in ME1, a sweet and pure Paragon of virtue in ME2.

Hey, can't come back from the dead without some issues.

I'm a Colonist War Hero. Because after my Shepard went through all of that sorrow on Mindoir, losing his family and friends, he still got back up on his feet and become a hero. Not only that, but killed some Batarians. But I am a paragon. But has the games progress, I've made my Shepard a little more renegade. But he is still known to be a full paragon.

Nope, I go ultra-generic Spacer-War Hero-Paragon and attempt to hug my enemies to death

I literally feel dead inside if I pick anything else lol

I think if you want to play a Ruthless Paragon the way to do it is pick Colonist Ruthless, and just have a Shepard who, no matter how hard he/she tries, can't forgive the Batarians for Mindoir.

I play Colonist/Ruthless/Paragade for my penultimate Shepard. We don't know the context under which Shepard allegedly shot surrendering Batarians. If I caught them... doing things... to human slaves, you bet your ass I'd shoot them. When we hear the Batarians complain about Torfan, bear in mind this is coming from a race that thinks slavery - and the brutal mistreatment of slaves - is no big deal. Plus, it really sounds like the Alliance screwed the pooch on Torfan, and would need a scapegoat for PR. I RP Shepard as though he was that scapegoat. My Shepard finds his ruthless reputation useful at times, but generally does the right thing - and never abuses his crew.

I play as a ruthless earthborn with about 2:(0.8-1) para/rene ratio by the endgame.

I've played a Spacer/ruthless/renegon before. But there canon reasons for that in my head, and it has something to do with my colonist/war hero/paragade.

I was going to edit my character for Colonist/Sole Survivor Cerberus, but then decided I like talking to my mother.

Mine was an Earthborn/Sole Survivor for my canon Shep. He was a little ******* on Earth and when he lost almost everyone [except for Toombs ;)] he did his best to help all people. When he learned that Cerberus was behind the attack, you better believe he thinks that humanity first is a load of bull. What has humanity ever done for the galaxy? They whine they don't get what they want and when they do get it, what happens? They whine about something else they don't have. We don't play along with galactic politics and civilizations and then we expect them to help us out. No, got to be nice and good to have them treat us well.

He may have been a jerk when he was a kid, but he grew up since then.

One of my sheps is earth born-ruthless, been bad all of his life. I was more Renegade then progressively grew Paragon as kind of a redemption atoning for past behavior kind of thing.

When I play paragon I wanna be the super-hero. So my main Shepard is Spacer War hero and so is my femshep.
My 3rd shepard which is like 70% paragon 80% renegade is earth born sole survivor though, that combo just screams bad-ass and 'against all odds'.

I might try a playthrough at some point with that idea. Sounds pretty cool. As it stands, I have a female Earthborn Ruthless, who's 100% Renegade about 40% Paragon; and a male Spacer Sole Survivor, who's 100% Paragon, and 50% Renegade. (glad it's looking like ME3 made the P/R system a little less confusing, and more like Kotor was)

I actually do it the other way around. My current playthrough is Earthborn / War Hero, and I'm playing my shep as a person with a noble heart who escaped the gutters of her youth and became an example to the Alliance, only to be soured by her experiences as a Spectre.

My ME1 playthrough involves her starting off as a paragon and slowly crowing more and more dissatisfied with the way things are being handled and the credibility the council gives her. Towards the end she'll have learned to take the renegade approach to things.

In ME2 she's a full-on renegade. She's angry with the treatment the Alliance and the Citadel have given her and is glad to finally have the freedom Cerberus provides to do things her way. Of course then the Illusive Man ends up a doublecrossing backstabber out for his own gain (in her view) and so she grows even more pissed. Some of the pragmatism inherent in her earthborn history is evident in this episode too, and she solves many smaller problems at the barrel of a gun rather than taking the time to appease parties.

In ME3 she's mostly bitter and finds little vindication if having been proven right about the Reapers. I'm very curious about how I'm gonna shape that playthrough in terms of choices, but I think I will be forced to make some hard calls if I want to remain in-character.

I think all of my characters have this set-up. Like you said, I didn't want a cliche success story for my background.

Colonist + Ruthless Paragade makes for a very interesting story, in my opinion. Especially when you combine it with the events of Arrival. I'm not surprised if the Batarians want my head.

yeah, it's possible, you can even overfill the paragon bar if you take the right choices.

My Shepard is pretty much the stereotypical Spacer War Hero, but he's also a little more realistic about things. For example, when I encountered Elnora (the Eclipse recruit), I recognized that she was wearing an Eclipse uniform, meaning that she had killed, and didn't spare her. I also frequently use Renegade interrupts if I recognize that talking down the enemy isn't an option. On the other hand, while sparing Sidonis was probably more than he could ever deserve, I did in not because the option was blue, but rather because Garrus has been learning from my Shep since the first game, and I didn't want him to lose all of the progress that he made.

I went colonist/sole survivor as I like to see my femshep as a person with immense survivors guilt and someone who just miraculously can't die.. No matter what happens, somehow, through the insanity of chaos and coincidence ends up living while everyone else around her bites the big one.
