First of all. Is hardcore considered insanity on ME1... Forgot
Also any tips? I recall the first one being punishing on veteran on my first playthrough. Wonder what the best crew is and any strats for getting through tough parts.. Like I remember getting around the room of that monster in the planet where the refugees are was a pain..

No, there's a separate insanity difficulty level on ME1 as well. You unlock it after beating hardcore once.
The best squad for various missions will vary depending on what mission it is. There's plenty of guides out there for each portion that can give you some advice. In general, though, your biggest asset is probably going to be Liara's biotics; Singularity in particular is incredibly useful, and when things like Pull are leveled up all the way, she can even lift/pull things as big as Geth Colossi, the biggest enemies in the game! I would also suggest playing through with a pre-existing character; you get to start with all your old equipment and experience points, which is VERY helpful on Hardcore/Insanity.
I'm not entirely sure which mission you're referring to in particular, but it sounds like Feros (the big plant controlling everyone's minds?). For that mission, I would suggest taking people who use shotguns (Tali and Wrex if you choose to have him specialize in shotguns) or at least equip everyone with shotguns, even if they have no points in that skill.
Finally, if you think it's hard in ME1, just wait until you try Insanity in ME2... ME1 will feel like a cakewalk!
