I'm thinking of getting Mass Effect 3 and I have not played any of the previous titles. How important do the players feel it is to play Mass Effect 2 first? Also, I have asked about the physical copy DRM for Mass Effect 3 on that forum and I feel that it would be ok. What about Mass Effect 2 physical copy DRM? Any form of SecuROM or similar intrusive DRM?
Thanks.

No one but the developers know how new player friendly ME3 is going to be, but it sounds like it will be pretty easy to get into.
Story wise I'd think it would be better to play ME1 since ME2 plot wasn't really that important. In ME1 you learn about the main villains and the gist of their motives. I think that most of the ME3 crew is from ME1 (at least two of the big ones). You also get to know some of the main ally's as well.
Of course, you can probably only import from ME2 and the playstyle is much more similar to ME3. And if you are a console player you can only play ME2...
So if you can only play ME2, then you'll probably be okay if you skip it. But if you have the computer (and time) to play through both games I would definitely recommend it. They are both really good
I don't know anything about the DRM, only that I've never faced any problems with it.

Playing the earlier games will allow you to import the same character from ME1 to ME2 to ME3, and the choises that character has made in the earlier games presumably have an effect on ME3 too.
I found that if you start an ME2 campaign from scratch, rather than importing a ME1 character, ME2 will assume you've made all the choises that are pretty consistently opposite of what I chose in ME1. That doesn't mean that ME2 wasn't a good game even when you start without importing a character, but the game was certainly improved, at least in my eyes, by continuing the story of a character I'd played before.
I assume that the same is true for ME3. I disagree with Krypplingz above though in that ME2 did introduce at least one character that I understand is going to be a major villain in ME3 - the illusive man.
I do recommend playing both the earlier games - they are definitely worth it, though I'm pretty sure you'll have a good experience with ME3 even if you haven't played the earlier games.
I don't think there's any intrusive DRM in either ME1 or ME2. At least nothing that's bothered me in the slightest.
