March
is a good time for marketing. Sadly. Game sales slow down for the
summer drag, throw in a couple of holdays, with birthdays (US average
birthdays is close to march (or was)). Sad but true.

It's the final game in the ME series. it doesn't need marketing, if they released it sooner they'd have more buyers.

Again, I don't see why it's coming out so late.

You misunderstand who it's being marketed toward.  Yes, we know about it,
but you're discussing this with avid followers of the series.  EA and
Bioware have made it pretty clear that they are trying to expand this
thing way beyond what they have now.  That marketing is going toward all
the people that might be interested, but haven't played any ME
games.    I'm also not seeing how releasing it sooner would result in
more buyers.  If they released it in time for the holidays, it runs up
against a bunch of games that come out then, and if they went for
January, then people would still be playing those games they got for
Christmas.   Also, the timing is quite deliberate since most fiscal
years for corporations end in March, so it looks really good for EA if
they finish out the year with a game that sells a lot.  Strong sales at
the end always looks good for investors since it potentially indicates
future growth.

What I don't understand is why USA gets it on the 6th, then England gets it on the 9th. WHY?! That's just begging for fans from countries releasing on the 9th to have a higher risk of spoilers...

Australia gets it on the 8th. As for spoilers, if you get spoiled it's your own fault. Stay away from the BSN and other sites until you finish it.

Bingo.  It's a matter of a few days.  If you can't keep yourself away from ME3 related topics for three days, then you have nobody to blame but yourself.  For whatever reasons, games rarely have a simultaneous worldwide release.  I'd say only having to wait three days is pretty good.

Bit of a confusing title, but I'll try and explain.

You are launching space copys at the moment, and while that's lovely and all for everyone that recives a copy, why are we waitng till the 9th (Europe) to play the game?

I can't see what more you need to do? Demo was a great sucsess I only had a couple of bugs every now and then, so It can't be getting the online ready.

What gives.

I live in the UK, and it really sucks that a game like Skyrim is realeased on the same date. Luckily, that week I have a ton of revision to do, so at least I can get some means of distraction =]

I've had games preloaded the week before the North American release date and come that Tuesday they would not unlock due to me being in Europe. Your likely going to have to wait.

I remember a couple years back when European retailers were notorious for releasing games early.

That video didn't answer any of my questions except telling me that Europe is full of idiots. Did everyone seem to forget the big boom that is Digital distribution? You normally have to activate the game on Steam/Origin anyway so why even bother with physical copies.

I'm annoyed that I have to wait 3 more days because I live in Europe when I'm going to be getting the digital copy anyway. I just can't even comprehend how stupid this entire system is.

Honestly it just seems like some stupid american thinks that Europe is 3 days in the future while america is 3 days behind.

It is not yet feasible to do away with physical game copies for many reasons, including:

1.)Some people actually still don't have home internet access.

2.)Home connections occasionally are too slow to make digital distribution possible for them.

3.)We have yet to decide on appropriate and acceptable levels of DRM for digital copies.

I'm included in number 2. I can download games up to maybe a few GB but past that it just takes too long for me to bother. Nor do I have any intention of paying more for my internet just to be able to download games faster.

As for having to wait even though you're getting a digital copy I assume it is both a matter of fairness and company policies. Fairness comes in when you consider most reasons for being unable to get a digital copy are not entirely the consumers fault. Policy comes in when you consider most stores are not going to open up their online sales before their retail sales, even if their agreement with the publisher allowed them to. They'd take a huge amount of flak for it from retail buyers.

It has nothing to do with "some stupid american" and I find phrases like that completely undermine any validity your argument had. Basically stores are told "starting from this date you may sell this game" which allows for enough time to get the physical copies to every distributor. After that is a cultural thing. The EU decided they prefer to release things later in the week. America has nothing to do with that decision.

Also, you might take note that sometimes release dates are pushed back in other countries in order to match distribution. Rather than wait for enough product to be made for every country they release it systematically by country, manufacturing enough product to ship and distribute between the date gaps.

At least it is just a few days, and not months, years, or never, like with movies and tv-programs and series.

This thread is funny... manufacturing & shipping takes time & planing

Even the date has to be set in advance for financial calculating of sales and what not

Because one day some guys sat down and said "This is when we like to sell our ****".

And like with many things, us americans were like "We don't want to wait until the weekend". Because you know, we're sterotypically impatient.

ok I understand "people" decided usa 6th eu 9th but to me thats just suits decided over a coffee to do that. There is no logical or techical reason why two dates Skyrim did just one 11/11/11 which was a friday

Haha. No. False. Marketing brings in new buyers. The MP portion of the demo is likely bringing in new buyers. And I'm not sure how much sooner you were wanting them to release it but any sooner and it likely would have less content and/or have more bugs. I'm good with March 6th (US, sorry for you guys having to wait 3 more days!).

As with any general rule you can find ways around it. They may forced it into their contract with US distributors in exchange for something, as an example.

But I don't know the inner workings of the industry any better than most.

Still are. For example, got Reach a week earlier, and my retailer (largest in France) told me I could come and pick up the game on the 2nd/third of march.

Your probably right. But what got me was Mr Priestly's answer "EU launches on Thursday or Friday for new media (books, music, games,
etc), North America launches on Tuesdays. Nothing we can do about
that. Sorry." as though it was some technical reason with no work around. what would have been a better answer would have been "soory that was a distridutors/management decision" or you suggest a contractual obligation.

What? So England gets it on the 9th while Sweden gets it on the 8th, same as Australia? That's weird, England and Sweden are practically neighbours! I'm glad I'll get to play the game one day earlier than England but it just doesn't make any sense! Explanation?

As stated above, EU retailers are notorious for releasing games early, and so a later date is set, while American retailers will have a few, but most will not break street date. Just the way it is.

Also could be because the situation of Europe's economy, but I'm not here to discuss politics.

I doubt its anything to do with economy, but more like a distributor in the us throughing a hissy fit about eu sellers shipping stuff early. I've had quite a few things of amazon.uk arrive a day or too early.

It's bad PR to transfer blame to someone in the business world. It can hamper future negotiations. So even if either management or contracts were at fault I doubt they'd say so.

I took that answer as either A.) They don't have the pull to do a singular release date, or B.) They don't want to pay whatever would be asked (not necessarily money wise) of them in order to do that.
