Hi,

I currently run xp and am tentative to purchase windows7 (though my system could handle it).

If'n you've run Dragon age on 7 or xp can you let me know how well it performs?

I will eventually get windows 7 but not sure if i should get it now, clean install and all.

sincerely, shmity72Image IPB

According to the BioWare developers, Dragon Age runs on Windows 7. Even better than on Vista. But I don't believe it's officially supported.

It will definitely play on windows 7. I have had the OS for about two weeks now and I would recommend it to anyone. It will most likely play a little better on 7 then xp thanks to more utilization on 7's part. You might have to upgrade your cpu if you're going to 7 though. Check system requisites if you plan on buying it.

I'd like to know more about this.

1. I expect it doesnt take advantage of 64 bit which is not a big deal (i dont have 4G of mem anyway)

2. I believe my win7 is running DX11 and XP was running DX 9.0c and I'm really interested to know if DA:O takes advantage of the newer DirectX.

The latest minium/recommended specs do include win 7 so I believe they have added support.

PC Games, a german magazine, stated that DAO runs the fastest on XP, the slowest on Vista, and the Windows 7 performance is 3% below XP.

No, DA will not be a 64-bit app, however if you system uses more then 3.25Gb or ram then the extra will be used for overhead and background programs. I doubt that DA will actualy use more then 2Gb at a time. WoW is very memory intensive and I'v only seen it use 1.25Gb while in a crouded major city.

Also, DA is a DX9 game as far as I know so there will not be any graphical difference between running it on XP vs 7.

All said and done, I would expect DA to work as good or better on Win 7 then it does on Vista. Win 7 is a cleaned up and optimized version of Vista and as a general rule, if it ran on Vista it should run on 7 with no proublems. Personaly, I will be playing it on Win 7.

I wonder if DA:O will be an alt-tabbable game (what a word.. :P)

I've found this is oddly a selling point for me :P

Researched some in the forums and found tidbit: "Because DA:O is cross platform, it is DirectX 9.0c only; due to XBox360 only supporting DX9" I dont know jack about DirectX other than i love it when a new version comes out; but I hope a post release patch will update the PC version to DX 11.

I don't think Win 7 is NOT supported, for it's been around for ~1 year and got released before Dragon Age. Game developers tend to support the major OS's and Win 7 is definitely a major one.

If they don't officially support it, why would they conduct test runs on it, anyway? :)

thanks for responses.

my system:phenom 2.5 (quad core*)

3 gig xp pro with capability of 8 gig...

ati 4800 series

judgeing by your replies...I think i'll forgo the 109 dollars for windows 7 for now.

To this day i cannot get great frame rate out of nwn2 with max shadow settings for some reason.

I believe it has to do with the electron engine not optimized for use with a quad core processor.

I hope that this is not the case with da:o.

anywho...I'll probably run it well on my xp machine with medium shadows and high textures/anti aliasing.

thanks again, shmity72

Because they know that Windows XP and Vista will eventually be depricated, but people will still try to play the game?

Given the way games in general are going in terms of detail and textures (especially if you hope to run maximum detail) the more video RAM your graphics card has the better for the most part.
As such a 64 bit OS is pretty much essential since the amount of video RAM your system has doesn't impact on system RAM availability under a 64 bit OS.
I'd say Win 7 or Vista in 64 bit form are pretty much a necessity (3GB+ of system RAM would be advisable with a 64 bit OS) going forward.
I used Rivatuner to see video RAM load under Everquest 2 a while back with my 2GB HD4870 and with all settings maxed out (no AA) at 2048x1536, it reached 1051MB and would likely get higher in raid conditions or such.

i used riva tuner once and 3d mark something or other...and ended up having to purchase a new video card.

but what you say about 64 bit is interesting in regards to its impact between video and system ram.

thanks for the heads up.

I'm pretty sure that the game will run well enough on XP, Vista or 7. Sure, there may well be tiny benchmarking differences between them, but in the real world it's going to come down to a couple of frames per second here or there - nothing to get excited about. This isn't some kind of multiplayer twitch FPS game where having ludicrously high framerates might mean something.

An interesting (imho) piece on 32 vs. 64 bit with regard to graphics hardware:

http://forums.techpo...ead.php?t=91260

Particularly notable is the following:

"If you had 4GB of system ram and a 1GB video card under a 32 bit operating system, each individual program could only use 3GB of that system ram (due to the video card using 1GB of address space) However there is something else most people are NOT aware of.
Under DirectX 9.0C (and lower) video card ram must be duplicated into system ram. That means if you're running on the highest settings with your new shiny 1GB video card - that 1GB of video memory must be duplicated leaving you with only 2GB left for your game."

edit: atleast im running dual NVidia Gforce 8600 cards, one as a physix. does this game suppot a physix engine?

No, DirectX9.0c is all they needed to make the game look this pretty.

Running perfectly on my computer with 64-bit Win 7 right now. My specs are not much better then the ones shmity72 posted above.

Also, I can alt-tab just fine with Dragon Age.
