Space Bar has SIX functions. How is this a good thing? My Solo-Silver experience with it.

Space Bar Revives, Activates, Runs, Dodges, Takes Cover, and Jumps Cover.  That is 6 functions, most of which can activate simultaneously.

For instance, if a comrade died at an objective terminal, it is very possible that pressing the space activates Revive, Activate, and Cover all at once.  That is not good.

Okay, I was solo-ing Silver with my infiltrator on Firebase Ghost, and I made it to level 7 or 8 and then came a Communication Array mission.  The laptop/computer thing was placed in the extraction zone on the box.  I was across the map, and shot/meleed/cloaked my way there. As I was running down the ramp, a troop of guardians and troopers came out of the building to the East/left while an engineer began setting up a turret behind me.

As I was getting shot at, I tried to doge for cover.  Instead, my Infiltrator decided to crouch-and-hack.  I mashed the keyboard, got her, and tried to dodge to cover again.  This time, she hoped the box beside the crate, and then when I mashed the space again, she again crouched-and-hacked.

Finally, i said to heck with this, cloaked, and ran to lob stickys at the turret and I escaped into the building behind the turret.

By that time, i was at half life and had no spec-ops survival packs left.

In short, why do we need a Super Derp Button?  And even if Super Derp Button is the default setup, why can't we have the option to reassign the keys?  For instance, I would much rather have E or Q be the activate/revive button rather than space bar.

Edit:

I forgot a function lol.  Space Bar also dodges!

Theres already a way to seperate it with an ini tweak.

Because its a (should i say bad?) console port, unfortunately. Only with manual tweaking is possible to change it.

Because EA thought most gamers were too dumb to handle so many keys, so they delayed it to March 6th and forced Bioware to implement a super-derp button, so new players would be able to jump right in.

Because BioWare loves the (Spacebar)/A button of Awesomeness.

It's the gears of war way. For consoles at least, i'm used to it but that kind of stuff does happen still and it IS annoying when it does.

Well, its not like each function would require a different key, for instance, I would do...

E - Revive/Activate
Space Bar - Run/Dodge
C - Cover/Jump Cover

"I'm dying, revive me quick!"

"I'm nearby I'll save you"

*presses spacebar*

"..what are you doing?"

"Tried to revive you."

"Why are you hiding behind cover then?"

"Let me try again."

*presses spacebar*

*hides behind cover again*

*teammate bleeds out*

..yes it's irritating.

Context sensitive buttons are great, in Zelda games.

Not so much when everything is mapped to it in a fact paced action game.

I'm not really that bothered with the spacebar taking up so many actions, but I do sometimes get annoyed by the hack/grab cover split. It's probably a lot more annoying for someone without cloaking though.

Allowing players to choose some key bindings would be really nice.

There is no tweak to seperate 'cover' from 'use'. the only thing you can do, is seperate sprinting from the rest, that's it. And in that case, both buttons will activate cover. And even worse, your sprint button won't work as cancel action anymore. so if you happen to reload your weapon, and a phantom surprises you from behind, you have to press the use/roll/cover button first, before you can start sprinting.
