Yeah Op, I posted a thread years ago about a Batarian squadmate and it got to about 20 pages of people bashing and hating on the Batarians.

Almost every post said the same thing, "If there is a Batarian squadmate, I want to be able to kill him."

In general, Bioware has done a great job creating a villainous and easily-hateable species with the Batarians. I would like to see them protrayed with more depth than just generic villains. i would still like to see a Batarian squadmate :D

This. Bioware has gone out of their way to make people hate them, when they're actually pretty interesting, at least moreso than all the fan service races out there...

I love Batarians, they aren't the most likeable and that really gives them a level of depth when you have to justify their actions.

Honestly I'm still holding on to a glimmer of hope that there'll be a Batarian DLC squad mate.

Me too! Oh gawsh, it'd be perfect!

Yes... yes it would. *enter Brotarian fistbump*

Can I swipe your Batarian banner?

Yeah it was made about maybe half a year to a year ago for a Batarian squadmate thread. Go ahead anyone is allowed to use it.

I have a different outlook on them after reading the first ME novel. I thought they were just a bunch of uncultured mercenaries, like the vorcha, but I was wrong. I like how their culture actually values respect. I don't want to see them exterminated, I want their race to have some sort of redemption!

I've not seen the novel, but I don't judge a group on face value, which is about all you get in the game, most hate against Batarians is knee jerk at best, they look ugly, slavery is a part of their culture and so on, history shows in human society how quickly one group will attack another just because of culture differences rather than try to understand it, and it continues into the present day.

I like em too a pretty fine counterpoint to humanity. (see romulan vs vulcan there the same damn thing)

The slave culture course is rightly a hot point.. But stange the Volus seem to never get brought up (first game they sell uhh everything there own clans on there worlds) and illium and endentured servitude kinda gets glossed over.

One of the funny bits was them Faking the mineral logs of a planet... and the humans jumped all over it claimed and sank a ton of money into a worthless rock. (can not remember the system someone help me out) Which I thinks funney as hell as it points out human flaw of greed and speed of expansion. And shows there not just Pirates but clever in a pinch as well.

All in all I'd say there govenments really to blame for the worst bits. As the two (if you help) that seemed well really surprised that humans might be different than they were led to believe.

From what I'm understanding is people are role playing into it  a little to much or this excuse about "oh bioware wants them to be hated"

That depends on what you mean by 'like.'

I like them in the sense that I think they are an interesting species with a cool design, who happen to make excellent villains. I think Bioware did a great job with creating a race that so many people love to hate. (totally intended)

But if by 'like' you mean am I more symapthetic with the Batarians than humanity in the 'cold war' that both are engaged in? Absolutely not.

That being said i hope going into ME3 that we get a more balanced portrayal of Batarians.

I like Batarians, to be honest, I think they have potential as a race; and it's pretty sad to see this potential wasted in ME3.

Edit: And yes, I took part in several pro-Batarian squaddie treads some time ago, and it was pretty harsh since people used to just come by to express their hate. There were positive moments, though, too; I remember I was able to persuade someone to see my point after one pretty polite discussion...

This. The only Batarians I remember are the guy who comes around to liking humans, the guys who're holding Mordin's assistant at gunpoint but see reason and honour their agreement with you, and the mercenary mechanic who I almost felt bad for tazering all Renegade style.

None of them struck me as irredeemably evil or anything close.

Which proves IMO that not all the Batarians on Omega or terminus believe in all the BS propaganda. They see the potential in working with us.

I'm not too terribly fond of a race that demands the right to enslave other species.

That is their leadership. We have no way of knowing whether the average citizen supports this. Many real life countries had such policies inplace in fact some continue it to this day. It took awhile and much upheaval to get the abolishment of slavery.

Quick question then you must also hate the asari because of their indentured servitude right?

Actually I hate the asari for other reasons, but yes, indentured servitude doesn't sit well with me. That's why I always take the other option when it comes to resolving that particular quest in ME2.

You've never played ME1 as a Shepard with the Colonist background, I guess.

I don't hate anybody but don't Batarians have a slave cast system? (I believe they are definitely a contemporary social metaphor). Those are really undesirable traditions in my opinion.

I'l too like a Batarian squad mate as well OP, Not all Batarians are bad the one who runs the shop for example, and also Garrus had one in his squad, there needs to be more regular Batarian citizen in ME3, most Batarians we've seen are just thugs
