I just wish we could all get along. Personally, I don't think batarians are such horrible people as a race. 300 years ago human themselves have done horrible war crimes and were slavers just as the batarians.
The four-eyed just need some understanding and time, and perhaps a hard boot to the ass for accelerated progress.
Am I the only one that likes Batarians :(?

The batarians (like all of the other species) have the option to *not* be slaving jerkwads. If they were only enslaving their own people it would be one thing. However, they routinely capture and torture members of other species that do *not* have enslavement as a part of their caste system, making them intergalactic war criminals. If they were to remove slavery from their modus operandi, I wouldn't hate them at all.
However, I expect that the events of Mass Effect 3 should be a wake up call. The fact that no other race is willing to help them in their time of need should show them just how their actions affects their intergalactic reputation and how it will lead to their hastened destruction.

I have a colonist background and don't hate them. If I gave into that grudge, that hate. It would make my Shepard lesser as a man. They don't want us to go all Rambo at any cost, they think we're greedy ****s with an expansionist policy only. Every time you've shown them kindness, they're quite clearly humbled.
It seems to be how their culture works. Prove yourself before you do anything, and then you get respect. Humanity didn't do a lot of proving worthy of respect, other than grabbing everything in sight.

I am SOOOOO glad that they are among the first to get blown the hell up when the Reapers arrive. Check out the latest Cerberus News feed for details. Slaving is an abomination and so I call it cosmic karma that they are among the first species that the Reapers tear up.

Considering that NOT having endentured servants / slaves is a very recent thing in human history I dont see what the fuss is about. After all, its hardly 160 years since the americas gave up that Idea. Not that long in a historical perspective.
Id have liked to have a Batarian squaddie: On loan from the Batarian secret service to counter the reaper threat they give us their top operative.
He hates humans. Hates the councill, Hates the SR2, EDI, thinks Joker should have been euthenized, picks fights with Jacob, has a snide and rude comment for everything and everyone. He is so ruthlessly effective that he will plug anyone for any reason and doesnt at all undestand why SR2 doesnt have a torture chamber.

*Shep asks questions, battie observes polygraph give swing as a clear indication of lie and is over the suspect beating the ****e out of him*

Who's to say that such a person wouldn't just, oh, sabotage teh Normandy SR2 and (try to) kill everyone on board? I see a few people trying to claim that Kai Leng would eventually "come around" in a similar manner, and I'm just not buying it.

Well I think Batarians you meet at quarantee zone aren't sucha "bad guys" sure they are pretty wary at you at first, but they both act alright after you speak with them a bit.

What do they even use slaves for? Slaves are used for manual labor and sex. Batarians don't find non-Batarians attractive. And any people capable of space flight should have automation down.

I think I've said before I wouldn't mind having a Batarian squad member (though I wouldn't mind a Vorcha either). I don't think they're evil, but I think that quite a lot of them are d***s. Whether they live under an oppressive regime that brings them up to be that way or not is another thing (I'd rather that than them being the token 'evil fantasy race' because it's a bit too simplistic and silly).
I think part of the joy of having one on the team is that you could either have member who is out of step culturally with their own people, an outcast that sees what their people do is wrong or you could have a more typical member their species that's willing to work with you but plays the role of team member who may betray you at some point (which I think should have happened with Miranda in ME2, but didn't).

Individual Batarians are individuals. They can be bad or good much like individual humans. As a culture, however, Batarians leave a lot to be desired. They are chronic slavers and criminals; it tends to be cultural. And you can't even say that their version of slavery has any redeeming value to it. At least in Roman culture, a skilled slave could rise high on society, accrue vast, personal wealth and possessions earn his own freedom and/or eventually be adopted into his owner's family or earn Roman citizenship. There's absolutely no evidence that Batarian slaves are ever treated as anything more than animal chattel. And we've never seen anything to give us any reason to believe that the whole of Batarian society is anything less than brutal.
So, while it's always possible for individuals to break away from that or to operate as honorable individuals within that kind of cultural system, we shouldn't expect it to be the norm or else the overall cultural system would be a different one.
And I always, always kill Balak, renegade or paragon. You don't negotiate with terrorists.

I like Batarians, I find them to be an interesting species. It's just sad that they keep being portrayed as a generic race of villains, slavers and criminals by Bioware and that any slight proof that they arent as bad as we think is imidietly and violently brushed aside by all the Batarian Haters (or otherwise racially prejudiced and ignorant).
Infact I've always wanted a Batarian Squadmate, weather it be Male or Female. Perhaps even as a Love Interest, that could potentially be interesting. Hopefully they get more development in Mass Effect 3. If I get the chance or option to save the Batarians from total extinction in ME3 I'm doing it without any hesitation, even if I have to sacrifice Earth (but hopefully it wont come to that). I already against my will sacrificed 300.000 Batarians (thats 50.000 more people than there are inhabitants on Babylon 5 from the series of the same name) and I really dont want any more unnecessary genocide on my hands.
And to all the Batarian Haters or just general racists/speciests I will quote Blitzwing from Transformers: "Why dont you go build a bridge.....AND JUMP OFF IT!". And then add that they go look in the mirror and realise that Humanity and Batarians are more alike than they (the haters) like to admit.
