www.baldursgate.com

EDIT:
Editing in some new info for anyone new coming to this thread. Heh.

Above is the link to the main site for the new Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition project which is aiming to overhaul BG 1; Beamdog/Overhaul Games also hopes to go on to overhaul BG2 and create BG3.

Here are the "official" forums:
forum.baldursgate.com/

I include that because I couldn't find a link to them from the main site. Also the main site doesn't get updated much; but the Devs DO post in the forums regularily.

Currently what we know is that the Dev's aren't allowed to alter the base game's content in any significant way; but to counteract that the Devs plan to include lots of new content, post release DLC, and are focussing on support for existing mods and mod tools.

The consensus seems to be that most of the BG1 Fixpack "mod" will be included in the release. But I really don't now much more than that at this time.

Anything I have missed lemme know and i'll include it.

EDIT2:
The game will be including the expanded "artwork" from One Pixel Productions. Woot!

And the main site now has a countdown clock on it.  No idea what for as yet tho.

The main site has a link to the forums now too but I will keep the link in this post for ease of use. :-)

EDIT3:
The main site has been updated to provide more comprehensive information about what BGEE add's to the existing Baldur's Gate 1 (and TotSC expansion) experience. It appears that is what the counter was for.

New quests, 3 new characters, some new years. And a crap load of new dialogue and interactions.

A new BG game possibly? Or a BG 1 remake looks like it could be...?

I hope it isn't like Dark Alliance, that game sucked.

Yeah, it would be very nice to hear official clarification from Bioware on purpose of this site.

BioWare is unlikely to have anything to do with the domain, as the Forgotten Realms/D&D rights are owned by businesses other than EA.

That is very, very interesting. Mr. Oster worked on the MDK2 HD remake IIRC, so Baldur's Gate HD? Considering the Infinity Engine, that should turn out breathtakingly beautiful. I would hope they don't have to update to 4E rules though.

"Raise Dead : Infinity Engine" probably relates to Infinity Engine being open-source now.

gamebanshee and all this connected bull**** -.-
infinity engine ain't open source and never will be!

gemrb is a custom written and completely new engine which can read and implement infinity engine assets like sprites, backgrounds, characters and so forth to recreate without the hardcoded backdraws. btw gemrb's developement started years ago and is by no means something new :P

b2t: what's up with this site, trent?

and pls don't come up with a hd remake. it's 2d and the only thing you can increase is the resolution which is already done through a widescreen mod. there's nothing wrong with the art used

1) This is being handled by Beamdog. That means that at best, this is a port.

2) Bioware does not have a license to do any more D&D work. They don't even own any of the characters or any IP outside of the actual engine used to create Baldur's Gate. The game name is a registered trademark of Wizards of the Coast. I think the only thing EA is allowed to do is port the existing game to other platforms, like what they've done previously.

3) I find it hard to believe people in this day and age still think Faerun, D&D, etc, are owned or controlled by Bioware. Bioware can't make any kind of Baldur's Gate sequel without getting a license--that's why they created Dragon Age, they simply don't own that property and want to own their own IP.

If anything, another team has gotten permission to port it to another platform--iOS, Browser or Facebook Based, etc, but it's likely to just be a direct port. Depending on the terms of the license--I think all Bioware/EA can do right now is just keep the existing game in print, but they can't add content or do anything major to the engine.

Now they've added the Aloundo's prophecy text:

"The Lord of Murder shall perish, but in his doom he shall spawn a score of mortal progeny, chaos will be sown by their passage."
So sayeth the wise Alaundo

Perhaps this is a clue, a message from Trent Oster on twitter in november, right after they finished MDK2 HD:

We're looking for a 2D Illustrator / Concept artist for Overhaul games. Our next game is a biggie. Apply at contact@beamdog.com

It's can't be a new game with new content, for one reason: Wizards of the Coast.

I don't think WotC would license any new 2nd ed material, when they're bound to start building the hype for D&D 5 soon, (http://www.wizards.c...nd/4ll/20120109)

Also, since the Forgotten realms that Baldur's Gate takes place in really isn't anymore, after the Spell plague and all that, I have a hard time seeing them allowing Bioware to turn the clock back 50 (or something) years, and have a story in a time that WotC is trying to move past.

Hopefully, this is just me being pessimistic.

BG rights are owned by atari. It's most likely an HD remake, and thank god for that. I cringe at the idea of any modern developer (especially modern Bioware) making a new entry on the franchise.

Ok, new theory: They are porting BG to the Ipad

From Trent Osters twitter as well: A new toy for the office. What could we be developing that would require an iMac? #yeg #gamedev

In order to make a HD version they would need to repaint all the landscapes since they are not scaleable. Besides the game looks good as is, not to mention the existing wide screen mods that already exists. I don't think making just a HD clone would worth the effort.

A port for other platforms such as iPad is more plausible, but that doesn't concerns me as I can't imagine playing BG on a tablet. A facebook application would be even dumber.

The only thing that would surprise me in a good way would be some sort of a standalone expansion, with the possibility of importing the character from BG or BG2, like Heart of Winter / Trials of the Luremaster for IWD.

You make a lot of good points and that really scares me. I can't see any hardcore fan really wanting to play in on an ipad etc. The point that the game looks good as it is though is your opinion (and mine) and not everyone would agree with it. To me however, it's not just the graphics that could benefit from a overhaul / remake.

Also, the logo is new, right? On the website that is, or at least it's been updated?

Why?  I mean, for an isometric game an iPhone/iPad/Browser platform would be prefect.  What about this particular game would make those platforms suck?

PCs are being transformed--the machines you use a decade from now will likely not be Desktop centric, with Windows 8, Apple, and Google involved, I suspect the whole paradigm will change.

@YohkoOhno:

From a technical point of view, IE games requires a mouse for proper interaction. Probably you can attach a mouse to some of those platforms, but then why not use a PC and fully enjoy proper interaction and larger screen?

Second, playing BG in my view means to take your time and enjoy a proper immersion, while those tablets are synonymous to being in a hurry, being on the move, noisy environment and so on. It's like the difference between reading a classic book printed on paper in a silent room in your house and reading a book in electronic format on kindle while on bus or subway. It's about immersion where the environment matters.

Making a HD version of a 3D engine game seems reasonable.
But a HD remake of a handdrawn isometric 2D game? Not so much.
Then a port to a smartphone/Pad? Doesn't sound exciting.

Well, we'll have to wait for new official announcements I guess.
