BG:EE is so on! I'm so excited! ... (kind of wierd being excited over a game i finished maybe 2-3 times - that means BG1 + BG2 incl. expansions.)

I'm feeling quite excited about what Trent Oster and his team are trying to do, though the excitement is tempered at what they can do - mostly because of the contract restrictions to changing old content (no new dialogue for old npc's, except for when they talk to the 3 new ones) and the lost original artwork (so 'enhancing' the graphics will only go partway).

I'm very supportive to the intent and very curious about what it will turn out to be, so I pre-purchased the day the Overhaul team made the revelation of what the game will be like and 'the shop opened'. But I have a 'gut feeling' there will still be things I would like to mod anyway (NPC1 project for banter for the old NPC's among themselves, SCS for better AI and making some of the encounters harder - I have my own list of things I do and don't want from SCS, I'm glad installing got easier with version 20 when DavidW included a customizable auto-install option - only for SCS II though)

A second gut feeling tells me, despite the team not wanting to break mod compatibility, mods, especially the ones tweaking rules and game mechanics, will need to be updated and having bugs cleaned out before they're fully compatible. So I guess I will be trying BGEE on 18 september, but only be able to enjoy it fully sometime in 2013. In the meantime, I still have 3 Tutu playthroughs and 4 BG2 playthroughs to finish, so at least I won't get bored while waiting for the modders to do their work updating their mods if needed.

That's if they get updated. Lots of mods are orphans by now.

Uh, yeah, that's worrisome as well. I'm seriously wondering if Tutu won't become superfluous because of mod compatibility with older unsupported mod and if I'll keep on playing Tutu after all, even after BGEE becomes a succes.

Another worry of mine: what will the impact on the modding community be, if there's even more games to mod right now, a BG1 modder has the choice to made if he will ensure compatiblity of his work with BG1 vanilla, Tutu and/or BGT. It will put a fourth one to the list. Won't it break up the mod community in groups of mod, with parts of it only having compatibility with Tutu, and some of them only getting new updates for BGEE?

As to compatibility with other mods, the Beta Test team is comprised of maybe half modders themselves. There would be more if IRL hadn't claimed others. At present Ascension64 himself is on it, as well as BG modders from way back who are now returning due to the effort involved. I wouldn't know if mods were being broken, but modder CamDawg had this to say on the BGEE regarding the matter:

Well... let's just say some of us are getting a good look in the beta test. I've not seen anything to worry me and the devs have been very responsive to concerns.

And also on a related matter...

I haven't seen any mod that's going to be made obsolete by BGEE. The only thing I anticipate being useless for BG2EE will be the BG2 Fixpack, and that's because I'm actively working towards that goal.

Tutu probably will become obsolete to a greater degree since BGEE is a Tutu... with loads of extras. I'm hoping though that Tutu NPCs are thereby compatible with BGEE. Actually I can test this and get back to you...

Thanks, Bhryaen, though "obsolete" is not the same as "incompatible". I'm certainly hoping for the best.

Yeah, I found the wrong CamDawg quote... Alas, I didn't recognize and address it fast enough. X-/

You're in the test team? Great!

Maybe you can test Finch and let her scribble something in her notebook how she likes to be in BGEE and if it's cosy to her?

Just a quick report... It seems testing mods in BGEE was already afoot by another Beta Tester (a modder, no less) as I mentioned it- and in a much larger scope... I'll keep you posted if anything goes public... Or you can always just monitor the BGEE Forum :-P

Very busy... much to do... Soon my work will be done... *collapse*

I'm so glad I only just found out about this. I periodically replay the series, and I started getting the itch again. So I hop on, look to see if there are any new mods released in the last year and WHAM, Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition.

Whod've thought that a Baldur's Gate google alert would be useful in this day and age?

I can only imagine how tough it would be to have been to find out about this five months ago. I'm already yearning for this. I also have a weird desire to play BG on my phone with the android version, though that probably won't be as awesome as it is in my head.

That main theme is amazingly reminiscent of the style of the BG series. Love it.

BTW, I didn't want to randomly create a new thread, but this one is pretty tricky to find. It isn't in the BG1 forum and it doesn't pop up if you search for enhanced edition. I only found this because another thread labelled enhanced edition linked it.

I agree completely! Although I actually liked the ambient music better, I felt like it fit right in with the BG music style. For some reason, though, the combat music link didn't work for me. Maybe they removed it?

Bhryaen never posted a link in the first place, but rather "black pits combat music".
is where it's at.

I like the new music too. Thanks for the heads-up, Bhryaen, even if you do have one un-typable name.

@Deucetcipher, sorry about the thread location. When BG:EE first got announced a few months ago, it started out in the no-spoilers, and some of us were wanting to speculate about BG2:EE and what they could do for BG3 eventually, and we wanted to freely discuss story details from BG2 and ToB without worrying about spoilers. The moderators were also insisting on only one thread for the whole subject of Beamdog enhanced editions, so it got moved, and I'm the one that made the request.

I kind of regret it now, but the spoilers are still back there in the early pages of the thread, so the discussion probably has to stay here. Again, I'm sorry, but I'm glad you found it.

Gah! Sorry- I only tested the first two... So much for rushing out links...

This is the thread on BGEE's forum that mentions the links. I'll fix the one above to work properly...

Looks like there's another new article out as well, as if the BGEE revelations on the new areas/ NPCs weren't enough... Talks about the coding hell they've been going through forging through the mess that is BG code...

I promise that link will work. ;-)

I am seriously bummed that the game got delayed.  On the flip side, will be able to enjoy borderlands 2 more without divying up my time.

This is indeed sad news, but as long as it results in a better finished product I'm fine with waiting. Gives me a couple more months of productive school work before returning to Candlekeep.

I don't know either, but maybe this is how the GUI gets unveiled. :-)

They should have left it veiled.

The delay was unfortunate, but not in the least bit arbitrary... If they hadn't delayed release I would've been far more disappointed: much too much yet to get done before it's presentable and playable. An enhanced BG isn't a game to release as a rush job.

@Incantatar
I'm not the biggest fan of the new GUI's appearance myself. Duller grayish blue slate isn't much of an improvement on the nice vBG1 gray slate, though it's less bright on the eyes than the original gray- but it's still a work in transition. The screenshot shown isn't even of the best stuff. What you're not seeing with the new GUI shot is the new gameplay versatility built into various screens... which I can't discuss. *sigh* That's what impresses me more than... the color

One new thing from the Baldursgate.com site is the addition of a story for Rasaad yn Bashir.. At the bottom there are also sound samples of his voice which are quite good.

I was all ready to roll. The question for me becomes whether to fire up tutu again or try to hold out for the ee release.

From the description of Neera on the offical website, does anyone think Edwin will have a strong involvement in her quests if he's in the party? Also Dynaheir + Neera vs Edwin :D

I've never played Baldur's gate, neither 1 nor 2.This is due to my age really, I was only born in '92 so naturally the first BioWare game I played was KotOR.

I have, however, been meaning to play both of them for quite a while, and now my main dilemma is, should I just play the enhanced edition, when it comes out, as my first Baldur's Gate experience? Opinions/advice?

The enhanced edition is expected to essentially have all the gameplay of the original plus a bit more. It should also have fewer bugs and a better user interface. Given you haven't played before and the EE is due for release fairly shortly now I would have thought it would make sense to wait for that.
