You guys seriously haven't heard the news have you ? Guess what, there is still a very high probability there will be a new Baldur's Gate game. I'm willing to bet it IS BGIII.

The reason I say this, is because I have read interviews at wizards.com about the new 5th edition supporting ALL eras of d&d, meaning that they want you to be able to play at any point in D&D history. They are planning to support all eras. They want to bring back a lot of the old content, products etc... stating it gives a lot more options.

They also stated that they planned to make Forgotten Realms the main campaign setting again for 5th edition.

That raises the chances of BGIII by 100%. Whether its done by Bioware or another company. I think Bioware should snag this chance, while they have a chance.

As far as I know, WotC hasn't given anybody the total license since Atari lost it via the Atari/Hasbro lawsuit. Seems like they could be keeping all options available, instead of being tied down by one game publisher like they did with Atari for example ?

This is what I've been thinking for a long time. A HD-remake of BG would be an instant sale for me. Imagine how gorgeous those prerendered graphics would be at 1080p, with retouched models and high-res textures? And if they got the original VA's on board to do FULL voicework... hmm, I should probably scale back my expectations a notch...

If Thief 4 also comes out this year and doesn't suck, this could be like 1998 all over again.

Could it really be a remake or HD version though? Because Atari did just re-release the game as a box set. Like a few months or so ago.via the D&D classic Anthology.

I totally don't want a BG3. Yes, they could make a new story and not even place it near Baldur's Gate, but... then why call it BG3? Why would any 2, 3, etc. use the original title if it had nothing to do with the original? Would ME3 make sense without its main characters? The remake of BG1-2 would be difficult to make acceptably except by huge BG fans, but a BG3 would be thematically pointless given the fantabulous finish of the series in ToB. It's been so long since BG2 that it truly does seem like mere exploitation to use the BG name to call a game BG3. The only way they could do it "correctly" would be to start BG3's story from an uber-high level... which also seems a bit anticlimactic to the series. A tad bit of gratuitous gilding the lily at best...

That said, it seems the baldursgate.com page is using BG1 portraits and music (or is that BG2?), so it doesn't seem like a BG3 effort thankfully... We'll see at 3P EST...

if there was a baldurs gate 3 i would want a new protagonist but atleast some of the older characters from bg2 or bg1. i really cant imagine my baldurs gate team without characters like minsc and viconia.

dude, read the whole thread. bioware has nothing to do with this. infact, bioware CAN'T do anything with baldurs gate, because they don't have the license.

Honestly...

Personally I am not getting my hopes up because a new BG game is unlikely. It's probably likely to be some sort of iOS port, or maybe if we are lucky an HD remake of BG1.

if you read some of the threads about how bioware butchered DA2 (the great fall of bioware and so on bla bla), you will get the feeling 7 out of 10 ppl think bioware created icewind dale and planescape
