I bought the Dark Alliance games on the XBOX last year and really liked them, I will never understand why they didn't use the original BG games story and settings coupled with the console games' gameplay style, it could have been a perfect way to release BG1&2 on the consoles. I never played the PS1 version of Baldur's Gate so I have no idea how it plays.

I've been hoping for some kind of remake of the BG games since falling in love with BioWare thanks to Mass Effect and Dragon Age:Origins/DA2. I tried playing the first game but it was too "old" for me to get into properly after Dragon Age. If I'd played them back in the day it would be different but DAO was the first western RPG I ever played. A remake with the Origins engine with full voice would be amazing but I'll take whatever they can give. As long as I finally get to experience these games.

No, please, no. Thankfully, Bioware has nothing at all to do with BG EE. The Origins engine is already outdated, massively outdone by Skyrim but especially the Witcher 2. Now, BG EE on the Red Engine, that would be something.

"We want #BG3 as well. #bgee is a part of the master plan."
So my cynicism wasn't entirely off-based... First cultivate a renewal of interest in the BG-series that presents BG1 and 2 without detracting from its original ambiance, then swing in BG3 on the coattails... in the same old format? Hm, we'll see. I'll reserve predictions and prejudgment this time though and just content myself with whatever production is supposed to be completed in the next few months on BGEE...
It seems the plan is rather settled regarding timing... Release announced for this summer...
Another good article about the launch with links in case it hasn't been posted yet...

Honestly, the thing I'm most excited about is that it will include Tales of the Sword Coast. I lost my CD for that a long time ago...
I also wonder if it will include Ascension. I downloaded it for the first time on my most recent playthrough, and I thought it gave the game a much more epic conclusion (even if I did have to take the final battle down to easy...). Although, if they're serious about BG3, maybe they'd rather leave the game more open-ended.

I feel the same way. I like this guy.
The popular opinion is that BG2 is better than BG1. Maybe the popular opinion will be that BG1:EE is better than BG2:EE...?

The Origins engine is outdated yes, but I think it would be perfect for those games. Using some super fancy new engine would just make it complicated and take forever to be released.
Origins engine is less than subpar. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 deserve way better.

Well I'll just save the link and try tomorrow. Isn't anything I'm not going to have to wait for anyway.
Well it worked fine this morning.
I'm ... apprehensive as to whether or not to be real exited. I would gladly play an updated version of BG1&2. I have them now (off of GOG.com) but I do have a hard time getting past the graphics and interface. Using the same game engine I assume we will still be using 2D sprites and such, but those can be made to look good in higher res. I’m not sure what they would plan on adding, but I hope they really don’t touch the story too much.
I’m going to be watching this for sure. What I will be waiting on is a in-game video or something like that.
PS – I hope GateKeeper would still work, or gets updated.

Especially when it sells hand over fist and all the so called experts who thought this style of gaming to be dead are left bug eyed, scratching their heads and feeling quite embarrassed.
Good luck with this! I'll be there for the what will hopefully be a massive body blow to current game development philosophy.

I'm very excited for this. I will have to see more details about it, but if it turns out to be what I think and hope, i'll view it as a welcome bucket of ice water over the heads of most modern game companies. Showing them that their preconceived notions of what modern games need to be are all wrong.

Hear, hear! I agree with you completely, VeeVito. If they do this right, it could start a new golden age of computer roleplaying games. If they fail, I'll still love them for trying.
It feels very vindicating that someone is finally listening to our segment of the market. I'll buy whatever Trent puts out immediately, just to put my dollar "votes" behind his business plan, if nothing else.
Probably the most important thing is that BGEE is profitable and generates a lot of buzz and interest, which it already seems to be doing with only a small amount of news about it released. That will change minds at the executive levels of Atari and WoTC, and could get our community more of what it wants.
Trent Oster must be a very charismatic businessman to have gotten the two big D&D license-holders to greenlight just a re-release. Can you imagine what those meetings must have been like? We need to do everything we can to make Trent's effort successful so he can get his bigger ideas approved. If Trent wins, we all win.
@Bhyraen, thank you for posting so many good links for us to check out, man. You're a good friend.

And maybe even allow you to choose your own "canon" party
You mean who survives into BG2 and ends up in the cages? That would be neat.
Maybe even a 'bridge' chapter that covers what happens between the last chapter of BG1 and the first of BG2, rather than the narrator telling it.

Exactly. The only issue is that this would mean they would have to create BG2 dialogue for all the BG1 NPCs, but I mean they've got writers working for them, and it's not like there'd be much else for them to be doing. It could also lead to a couple of tricky situations (what happens with the Shadow Thieves quest if Edwin's already with you, for example) and they'd have to come up with a reason why Imoen's there too if you didn't take her, but really that wouldn't be too much work (especially the latter, Jonny has got some very valid reasons for capturing her even if she's not with you...)

Actually, talking about voices. That's the thing that I've missed from RPG's ever since BG. The feeling of entering a new place, and then before you see anything you hear the arcane language of a spell being cast, brilliant - and scary as hell!

I hope they get Kevin Michael Richardson to do some extra dialogue. His voice can move mountains.
I always pictured the narrator as a white man, so I was surprised to see him there. That guy has quite a long portfolio.
