I'm not saying it's dumb to play as yourself, I'm saying it's kinda stupid and creepy to use Mass Effect as a romance simulator. Its strange for a straight gamer to run the gay romance gauntlent or for a gay gamer to pursue every straight romance because they want to experiment with their sexuality. That's not what the romances are about.

Well you might be creeped out, but if playing that way helps someone with problems in their life then good for them. Who are any of us to judge.

Ultimately, whatever romance a player pursues is part of Shepard's story, you can identify with the character and be happy for them, but don't over-identify. You shouldn't use the game to get your own private kicks or to test your sexuality. That's just plain creepy and I don't see how it would help anyone with their problems.

I don't think anyone in this thread said they were doing that.. seems like you're getting creeped out by hypothetical situations you create yourself. And really, there's a lot worse ways to do the things you've listed than by playing a game.

I'm not pulling this out of my butt. The OP asked , "Female gamers who play femShep is more the focus. Im interested to see if in a virtual setting people are willing to experiment with romance against their identified orientation."  Link.

I'm just voicing my opinion. I don't believe the romances where built into the story for players to experiment with their sexuality, it's not how they should be used. It's not fair to the romance, to the characters and it's just strange someone would use the game as a romance simulator.

Wow this thread is more interesting, compared to the ''straight male gamers'' one..... seems like women are more open-minded about s/s relationships. :)

The only reason I used the word "dumb" is because that's exactly what you said. You also called it "shallow." Now you're calling it creepy and stupid. The romances are not necessarily about anything, and they certainly don't have to mean the same thing to everyone. What gave you the idea that you know what romances should be about for anyone anyway? I don't get it.

But I also agree with everything Cazlee said, and I don't think I need to add anything else.

I think it's dangerous for someone to experiment with something so deeply personal in a fictional romance. Mass Effect isn't as romance simulator. The romances are controlled side stories, they have their own background, development, and arc and to interject yourself into the romance - to treat the relationship like a real life walk on the wild side - cheats the you and the romance.

It doesn't make you a lesbian if you're a female player role-playing lesbian F!Shep and it doesn't make you a lesbian if you're a female role-playing M!Shep romancing a female character.

Personally my orientation doesn't have an effect on what gender character i romance in RPGs. Though thats probably partly cause i go for the many characters with different personalities and backgrounds all of which are not me style of role-playing. Though i do usually have a character that is similar to me, and will make the same decisions i  would choose and go for my favourite LI.
Still in that case it is still a fictional character, i'm not doing anything with them, so for me gender or species really don't make a difference like they would in real life.

See i interpreted the OP's phrasing as more  "are you willing to consider romancing a character even if their gender doesn't match up to your real life orientation?" and less of a " does anyone do a femshep/liara romance to see if the romance scene makes you all tingly to test if you like girls or not?" question.
(i'm exaggerating of course with that second one, i don't think thats what you read it as).

Yes, to see the different outcomes and dialogue, and because a lesbian romance in a game is still a new thing that I've not seen in any other game before. Same with a gay romance; it's too much a novelty to pass up.
Darn my curiousity.

I took it as, in a virtual setting, in a fictional setting, a setting that seems to have few real-life repurcussions, as a F!Shep verision of yourself will you try dating someone of the same-sex?

I don't think it was about dating a female character you really like and exploring a romance. I think it was, will you substitute yourself for F!Shep and try dating outside your orientation.

Maybe with Samantha, but I'm not that interested in Liara

I'll be continuing with Garrus in my main PT

I'd have been interested in seeing how a relationship between FemShep and a non-mammalian woman would have played out (turian, krogan, drell, etc)

I find myself not pleased with most options as far as guys go, so I tend to go for the s/s option. I didn't like Kaiden in ME1 (too whiny), so I went with Liara. Cheating feels wrong to do as a full Paragon Shep so I stayed loyal and will continue to do so.

Don't know why there is this need to put people or videogame characters into a box - for myself anyway, in my own life and in relationships, there are simply individuals who move you, who speak out to your heart, regardless of gender, class, or ethnicity.

No asari relationships for my Shepard, unless there is someone else besides Liara.  Never liked her for a partner with any of my Shepards, female or male.  It always felt like the Commander was trying to rob a cradle.

As for a S/S, it depends on the romance available and how the character is written.  I trashed a play-through in ME2 because I ended up hating the writing/delivery for Jacob and wanted to go back before Shepard starting flirting with him.  If the S/S interest is well-written, I've probably go through and experience it for myself.

And as a point of reference:
  • Kaidan was my FemSheps' LI in ME1.  I've a Vanguard that stayed faithful to him, an Infiltrator that left/cheated on him with Thane and Garrus (different saves) and a Soldier that romanced, but left Kaidan to die on Virmire and never pursued anything in ME2.
  • My MaleSheps' are a little different;  my Adept went after Ashley in ME1 and Jack in ME2, the Engineer didn't have a LI in ME1 but went for Tali and Miranda (different saves), and the Sentinel is gay (mostly because I ended up basing him off a TV character who's name fit the naming scheme for my Shepards).
For ME3, I only know that my Vanguard will stay faithful to Kaidan.  Depending on the writing, the rest of my Shepards will make the decisions as they come up in the story.

Probably because women in general are more open about sexuality and love.  And because, female relationships are deemed "more acceptable" by main stream American culture than male relationships.  A female thinking sexually about another female is usually "hot," while a male thinking about another male is usually "gay."

They just don't want to admit that they're curious too. Some of them said they'll just watch it on youtube for laughs. For laughs...sure...:P

Totally! I live for those things, and can't wait to see who's going to be available to whom - I've been diligently avoiding spoilers, so it's going to be brilliant. =)

Edited (after reading more) - Not straight, but female. =) I play FemShep and MShep both, and I'll be pursuing all the MShep m/m options, probably all the FShep options. I play FemShep more than MShep, but I really enjoyed the s/s options in Dragon Age and am just thrilled that Mass Effect finally got in on it.
