I'd also like to add that we are also 3 dimensional, and that some of us like clothes, make-up and shopping just as much as gaming, or other activities men generally partake in. It's not like you have to fit into an established mold, so don't be surprised if you meet people with a variety of interests.:o

Another aspect: Men are dwelling in the world of woman , shopping stylish things , changing hair style to give them sex appeal and most of the womenly things done in a parlour is also done by men very often ..and the list goes on ..so i guess women should also capture some of their strongholds :P

I don't know about PC, but on PS3 I haven't had any issues on the mic. Either everyone is silent (boring) or
there are one or two people who have mics on, and I've never had anyone
say anything bad.

I do have to say that I haven't come across more than 2 other females on mics. I don't think anyone should feel like they can't use mics for fear of being bothered. I just treat everyone
equally as if they were my brothers. If someone says something gross, I
ridicule them in a joking manner or better yet say something grosser. ;)
I don't easily take offense to much. Either guys will respect me and
appreciate my scintillating wit (sarcasm alert) or they will hate me and
ragequit. Either is ok by me. :P

lol It's more of luck I
guess. I think someone mentioned here before once that they got
harrassed by few guys in a random game. Best way to deal with it is like
you said, just stay relax, treat it as a joke or move on. If they're
not happy with it, there's plenty of other lobbies :)

Planning to get PS3 sometime around this year. The Last of Us preview on E3 is just tempting me away from my X360!

Yeah it's hard for the fairer sex to get into something that is obviously developed for their counterpart. Not to say that girls can't enjoy them. I successfully get people into LBP but even LBP is a little bit too difficult for them. It just seems too hard for them to use the controller. I guess some of them might enjoy Heavy Rain, I know I did, and it isn't action heavy at all. But again you are on xbox.

I guess as mentioned by DragonRacer, most girls aren't into scifi and alternative universe as well. But I know girly girls who like A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones so as long as you can get them past "oh scifi I'd better stay away from these", and the story has a core that is more complex and about human, then you'll get them hooked.

.... What.

How did you miss out on the hordes and hordes women who play videogames and watch science-fiction? I've been gaming since I was old enough to hold a controller and type on a keyboard. I've been watching and reading science-fiction since I knew how to watch TV and read a book. I'm not some mysterious unicorn exception to the rule. Women like that stuff as much as guys do. They play as hard as guys do. They will kick your ass in a game as much as a guy would. Don't make ridiculous generalizations.

"most girls".

Pffft.

This. To support
Damanique point,  I've also been reading/watching/playing sci-fi and fantasy stories since I was a little. I think a lot of girls might not be as vocal (I almost never speak on mic) about it as some others, but they're definitly there. I have been playing me3 multiplayer since launch and if Im not too busy, I play almost everyday.

At my local place here, majority used to see girls as those who likes to go for shopping, makeup stuff etc etc while the men are more into sports or gaming. God knows, how many times I've been asked this question; "Who actually play this game (a copy of Dark Souls)?" ehhh me? "you? hah that can't be true." right, it's for my bro ha ha ha *pays, run back home and play 24/7 till NG+* Nevermind the odd looks I get when I went to the comic book section (Marvel, Dc etc) of a bookshop instead of the manga or the romance novel section (eventhough I read them both lol). This probably stems from back in the old days where there were few female gamers compared to male gamers possibly due to games being catered to male audience compared to nowadays where games are much more diverse (for example in comic books - back in the old days it's all Superheroes stuffs where it might attract more of the boys attention towards it, nowadays you have plenty of diversity like Fables, The Unwritten, DMZ, 100 bullets, Saga etc etc etc etc).

In the end, it's more of a personal taste. Not all females go shopping crazy or into make up that much and definitely not all guys play video games or watch football. Same goes for scifi or fantasy (yes, I love them too as much as I love kittens) or etc etc. And there's those who enjoy anything as long as it's interesting and fun for them. So personally, games shouldn't just be specified to which gender. It should be specified for people who enjoys gaming for what they are regardless of who you are :)

Yeah i think its stupid how guys don't know how to act aorund women. just treat them like you'd treat any random guy your playing with. Its not that hard. anywya I only came across one so far, but mostly cause i'm always playing with friends , sometimes I'll open up a room to 1 random person but i'm almost always playing with at leats 1-2 friends

I don't think you can have any idea of the level of abuse I'm talking about if you're going to compare it to gossip, and I don't particularly like the suggestion that women should have to switch lobbies or not broadcast their gender if they want to be comfortable.

Guuumhppff... Gossip. I am most familar with this "Gossip" you speak of. That it is the number one choice of weapon of females preferable to fisticuffs.

And can be just as damaging if not more then punching someone in the face and breaking their nose. At least that can be set and healed.

The combination of "Gossip" and "Shunning" is said to be quite powerful if I remember correctly. It can break spirits and only the most strongest of wills can survive it. Anything weaker is stunted for life and will always cause the issue it revolved around to be a sore spot for the rest of someone's life in some cases.

This is what makes the online community both a blessing and a curse. There are far more people to utalized this combo to deadly effect but at the same time it allows similar minded people to link up which can make the effects less pronounced.

Though I'm inclined to believe the same thing,
I have no proof either way...

Though I am curious. Why do people think of girl gamers as an oddity?

@ OP, any girl players out there?

I play with 2-3 other female friends who often love playing the Turians, Kroguards and Batarian races. Hilarious when trying to match the character voices in game to their RL voices on mic at times.

Of course there are female gamers, me being one of them. There are so many weird people out there though. Once a geth asked if I was a girl, and continued to hover over me for the whole match. At the time I was a pink female infiltrator...One of the many reasons I don't have a mic.

Mmmph... It's the age old 'Gender Role' portrayle done by Hollywood. Gamers are steriotyped as nerdy weak pimply faces boys with oversized glasses who were regularly picked on by the jocks, mocked by the cheerleaders, and generally found 'digusting' and shunned by the female populace at large. They gamed because they could escape reality and transform into big strong "Conan the Barbarian" style people who well... I'm sure you're familar with THAT character's habits...

As such, it was portrayed as a male's role and girls were portrayed as not having any interest in such silly things. Since children tend to copy what they see in the media, volia! Steriotypes brought to life. Females as I have stated before use gossip and shunning as their primary means of combat instead of the good ole' beatdown prefered by males. Early female gamers may have hidden this 'guilty pleasure' to avoid being shunning until numbers of proud type came forth.

To nerds, females are this mysterious otherworldly creature that if having any interest in their hobbies is reveared as a Holy Goddess On Earth to be worshiped and clung to in the hopes of "finding Romance."

The trend continues to this day.

And they'll be doing it more and more in the future, else natural selection will out them from the game :P

On a semi related note, maybe this is why  there aren't many female gamers, at least not playing shooters. I would have flipped so much **** <_<

I got into gaming when I got my kids a Nintendo 64, with games such Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Conkers Bad Fur Day , then we moved onto a Game Cube, , PS2, Wii. My gaming only became an obession when I got a Ps3 and found Dragon Age. I got a free X box with my extra large TV I bought for gaming and was introduced to the world of Mass Effect, and I now play multiplayer on both Ps3 and X box. I find killing things very statisfying much better than shopping.

But what those "weird people" are doing is unacceptable.

What do you intend to do about the fact that people treat you with a lack of respect?

Not as a person. Not as a gamer. But as an oddity. You're just going to put up with that?

If someone looked at me as some bizzare abberation of nature I'd be angry.

In a nutshell. Don't tolerate this sexism!!! You should complain!
