But what those "weird people" are doing is unacceptable.

What do you intend to do about the fact that people treat you with a lack of respect?

Not as a person. Not as a gamer. But as an oddity. You're just going to put up with that?

If someone looked at me as some bizzare abberation of nature I'd be angry.

Understand the majority of gamers and the usual target audiance are males ages 12-18. (Not saying this is the only group but it's by far the largest.)

I remember being that age. Girls were this "bizzare abberation of nature" which made them so facinating you couldn't help but hover over them like an excited scientest. Especially when they shared the same hobby as you. Getting a girlfriend was considered the biggest thing next to well... you know... Third base? And usually it started because you found a girl who shared your interests.

It was like an improvment to your status or something and we all know how status is important to teenagers.

im pretty sure the avg gamer is a 37 YO male.

I play more first person shooter than my brothers combined play time of that genre... just saying..

First game that got me hooked on FPS, and WWII history, was Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Didn't really like it, but back then, there wasn't really much "less complicated" games to play. I mean.. just point and shoot, much easier than complex Chinese RPG games we had. Then there was offline Battlefield 1942.

Then Call of Duty got me really hooked. Only played single player for all the CoD series and loved the stories and background. Made me feel for the soldiers fighting for the countries and I was very into WWII history and stuff.

And they'll be doing it more and more in the future, else natural selection will out them from the game :P

On a semi related note, maybe this is why  there aren't many female gamers, at least not playing shooters. I would have flipped so much **** <_<

 *referring to the article* I would have snatched that keyboard back and resume playing but with more intensity (headshot, headshot, headshot)

There are female gamers who are into shooters, though I'm not sure by how many. Although I'm not really into Halo (I mainly play em' for the campaigns only), COD or BF3; I really love playing Metro 2033, Far Cry, Ghost Recon AW 2, Rainbow Six Vegas, Bioshock series, Half-Life series and my personal fav, Borderlands!
My first shooter was the first original Doom. Ahhh the good old days where bad graphics rules FPS and aiming doesn't involve up & down lol

Is part of the reason why women don't tend to play shooters the simple fact that most of them have no playable female characters?

Would Mass Effect series really have attracted as many females if Comander Shepard could only be a man?

Girl Gamer: Ooh. Thats a cool game. Is that Gears of War?
Boy Gamer: Sure is.
Girl Gamer: There is a female soldier in your team. Do I get to play as her?
Boy Gamer: No. You just play as the dude.
Girl Gamer: That's rubbish.Image IPB Why can't I play as the woman?
Boy Gamer: Don't blame me. I didn't make the game.

This is very true for me. I prefer games where I can play as a girl, customisation being a super plus as well. That is why I got super excited when I learned about Saints Row a few days back. Typical male game ala GTA where you **** **** up + lets you play as a girl if you so wish. I don't even care if it was meant for fanservice, I'll take it. :P

Another reason why there are not many girls playing shooters is perhaps because most don't really have a gripping story. I'm looking at COD, Battlefield, and the like. But then again. shooters are mostly about the mp nowadays, so IDK.

I understand that games are set in fictional medium allowing people to be more flexible in the roles of different genders.

That said, lets how hard this noose of mine gets yanked because I'm foreseeing myself getting hanged for this big time. However it's a very sad and ugly truth.

Females, at least in the US Army, can't speak for other branches or countries, aren't permitted in Combat-roles (IE: Infantryman) not because of "Women can't do what men do" but because Sexual Harassment is still a very tricky issue to deal with. Infantrymen are regularly forced into situations where unintentional Sexual Harassment can occure or people abuse the situation and take advantage of it.

To illistrate, I ask women this. Would you be comfortable being shoved into a 10X15X10 metal box (APC) with 8 complete strangers with no breathing room? The guy/gal across from you is literally in your face for 12 HOURS a day, sometimes even longer, you can't even move your head to identify anyone who may have touched you whether accidentally or intentionally and even then what isn't defined as 'inappropriate' touching can still be considered Sexual Harassment. If that wasn't bad enough, say you're in a HWMMV as a Gunner. When that HWMMV rolls over, your buddies are required to GRAB you and pull you inside so you don't get crushed. If anything flips over, it's really hard to mantain control of yourself and that just screams possible abuse of Sexual Harassment laws or abuse for dragging out an actual case of Sexual Harassment.

While games don't have to worry too much about these issues(they're fictional, who cares?) they draw a lot of inspiration from real life and in real life, women just don't want to be in these situations for the most part. Among guys it isn't a issue because we have rules reguarding this and are allowed to laugh it off mostly. (Sexual Harassment CAN be filed by one Guy against another but it isn't common.) Even rarer there are cases of guys who can and will file Sexual Harassment charges against Gals because yes, they aren't comfortable being touched ether. It's rare and also rarely reported but guess what. Females being charged with rape against Males is a real issue and it does happen.

^^Oh, yes, because shooters (or games in general) are so realistic, especially the health regeneration or medical kit part. Right. If men are so tough, why do they need that? Curious thing. Next plz.

What you said about women on the front lines is mostly true, anyway. You just forgot the part where girls also get periods, and that would be extremely awkward on the field somewhere in the middle of  nowhere. Personally, I don't get anybody that would be willing to go without a shower for days, slug through mud, and otherwise be really gross, but that is just me. It's just the part where you mix games and reality that deserves a bullet in the face :) We play games to escape it,  or to do stuff you normally wouldn't/are not allowed to/can't do. That is the charm of games.

The blood is a non-issue. You'd be surprised how many male soldiers carry tampons into the frontlines. Good for periods AND bullet wounds! :P

While I do see your point and noticed it in your sarcasm dripping post, I already posted my disclaimer about being aware of the fictional nature of games. There's still a 'fictional' in 'non-fictional' however. Games don't really address issues like Sexual Harassment but still carry over the same aspect their live counterparts (if they have any) have such as a lack of female playable characters in FPS's based on military operations.

While it's good to see this trend slowly balance itself out with time, most games have some inspiration from somewhere in real life and it tends to reflect that. Even those that look like they were crafted while on some kind of substance still have aspects you can find in history books or modern life. There's no disputing that.

There is no true escape. The walls simply have different wallpaper.

Personal preferences I guess. I don't care much if the playable character is male or female as long as the gameplay is good and I have fun playing it. Shooters tend to be more focused on multiplayer aspects of the game too nowadays and I'm not really into MP before ME3 coop since my net is crappy anyway (part of the reason I can't enjoy Diablo 3 much... the constant teleporting! :pinched:)
