I'm doing the suicide mission and to get the achievement for helping everyone survive do you have to save the kidknapped crew aswell or are they expendable?

Dunno about the achievement, but its better to save them with Mordin. Cause later in the 'hold the line' segment where the others stay back to give you cover, Mordin has the best 'chance of dying' even if he is loyal, and I doubt you'd want to take him along for the final fight....

From the wiki:

"This achievement also requires you to save whatever Normandy crew members are still alive — although this achievement can be obtained even if all of the Normandy crew has perished at the hands of the Collectors except Dr. Chakwas. A loyal escort must therefore be assigned to the crew to ensure that they return to the ship safely. It is possible to get this achievement without assigning an escort, even though the crew members die. It is unclear whether this is conditional upon Dr. Chakwas and Yeoman Chambers having survived up to that point."

Just wanted to throw this out there - I've taken Mordin & Tali to the final fight multiple times on all difficulties except insanity and haven't suffered a critical mission failure yet!

That is actually the sensible thing to do. The final fight should be done with your weakest fighters, as that leaves your strongest ones behind to 'hold the line'. This ensures your best chance of everyone surviving.

No.

As soon as they are kidnapped, there's a ticking clock as to how many are save-able. The longer you leave it, the fewer crew survive. But for the achievement you don't need to worry about this and can take your sweet old time doing the crew missions.

However...

When you DO rescue the crew (however many are left), then you DO need to make sure they get back to the Normandy safely. So they need a loyal escort. Otherwise they die and you don't get the achievement (bugs notwithstanding).
