If it offends you so, don't play it.

Mmmmm, I'm not sure I agree with that.

I think this conversation right here is massively out of perspective because she's an overtly violent badass who'll happily chin an alien twice her size, it's not like she's mincing about in a miniskirt needing a good hard rescuing every other act. We're talking about what she looks like when you strip off the full body armour for reasons I'm not going to spend much time considering.

(As an aside I find it bizarre that objectification is fine if we post a more realistic image than one in a computer game and all sit around going "mmmm, yeah baby, she could be my positive role model any day")

But if something you find offensive finds it's way into popular media I think it's healthy to have it discussed, even if it, like this is a bit forced, it highlights potential issues so they might be avoided in the future. Otherwise you risk things becoming accepted through apathy.

Thanks.

I am not blaming anyone else for my disorder, I am responsibel for it. However, it is ableist to tell people that because they have a mental health issue with something they should just avoid it. I never said they had to change it or anything, it would be great if they did but it is too late. But i DO NOT think that i should just ingore it and be quiet about it. This is a major issue in society and if everyone was just quiet about these issues, things would never change. I have a voice, and I am going to use it.

That is the same as telling a minority that they should jsut avoid racism video games or a homosexual they should avoid homophobic video games. It is ableism.

No one is discriminating against you. You also have every right to voice your opinion on the matter. Who said you didn't? You have every right to send petitions, emails or any other device you wish to use to show your displeasure. However, what you cannot do is force media to change or omit women who are too thin, have too skinny of arms, legs and torso. To do so is telling women who are those things that they have the wrong body type. There has to be an equal medium where all body types are appreciated and celebrated. Granted, I find her too skinny for my taste, but there are women out there who have arms that are ultra skinny. I am more concerned as to why her thighs are out of proportion to the rest of her body, but oh well. When I said you should ignore it, I didn't mean you don't have the right to voice your opinion. I meant that if it is a health issue for you, for your own safety, you should avoid it. Stop being hyper-sensitive.

I'm sorry. I don't agree with this at all. Having skinny people in video games isn't discriminatory against people with eating disorders. Again, if this game is triggering and detrimental to your health, then for those reasons you should avoid it.

The BIG difference here though is that Bioware CREATED this woman. Purposely making her look a certain way and this is where the problem lies. They had the power to create this model and did so willingly in an unrealistic and unhealthy fashion. I think that's more what Sashimi_taco is trying to get at here.

People are a diverse collection of different genetics and body types. check out this pictorial (warning: athletes in underwear) featuring the body types of many different athletes. You will see that even among those in the same field of athletics, there is a variety of body shapes and sizes.

Sure, every person has their own stereotypes of what a soldier "should" look like, based on historical depictions of soldiers in media, their own experiences, and what have you. But as the linked pictorial shows, people do come in all shapes and sizes, and perhaps we as a media culture should start accepting that different body shapes can still represent strength.

And when you look at *all* of them, one thing you notice is that very few of them have skinny, muscle-less arms, like FemShepard does, and those that do are in fields where they don't *use* their arms.

I get that you have an example of complexity but it is still lazy to put FemShep onto a male rigging/skeletal structure no matter the complexity. FemShep is a woman, NOT a man. Having her walk, move, and make hand gestures like a man is not female, it is not unique. That is the point I am trying to get across and why it reeks of laziness.

Without knowing how much work is involved, we can't call it laziness. Yes, they did it before, but maybe the game was compromised because of that and so it was avoided in the future. Maybe they just included far more interaction than previously, indeed, maybe the change allowed them to do so. It's not a like for like comparison.

8 pages of a thread complaining about FemShep being too skinny to be a "soldier".

Not a single picture of Femshep linked or displayed to prove a point or serve as reference.

BSN, you win again.

Here you go, underwear pic of her.

seen skinnyer infantrywomen.

Thank you. And the argument should end HERE.

Hell, it can be reasoned that she used to be more muscular before getting killed in the beginning of ME2 and wasn't quite the same after being resurrected. But even that's not needed, see the post above.

But of course, the argument will not end. Go go BSN, adding entropy to the universe.

....
....

Can we just have a thread with pictures of female athletes but no argument?

In ME2, I had to pretend my Shepard had amnesia to explain her willingness to work for Cerberus without ever mentioning Akuze.

In ME3, I'll have to pretend my Shepard developed anorexia in prison.

Thanks, Bioware! Headcanon fixes everything! :-D

To make things worse, they reinforce the notion that this was their goal when you look at the differences in the options for their "casual" wear. Has a member of the dev team responded as to why they tried to make femshep look so deliberately " sexy?"

People like their characters to be sexy.

When you look at the mods people with female characters are use, they rarely make the character's clothing more practical.

ziggeh we will have to agree to disagree because you think it's complexity while i think it's laziness. let's end it there.

bob as i said before in my previous post about the romance scenes in ME1 they are very similar just different unique animations for the romance scenes due to different skeletal structures. i understand where you are coming from and it could be a CGI scene entirely, or maybe not. we don't truly know. all i know is that there are so many clipping issues in ME2 and it looks it will be continued into ME3.

Her arms kind of freak me out. I don't know whether it's because they're thin or not. They just don't look quite right in general.

I don't think they bend quite right.

Probably because the animation wasn't designed for underwear.

Therein lies the problem. It is a male-dominated industry with a heavily biased userbase. There is very little vision of the contrary to drooling over females. Until developers are willing to step up and go against the grain with non-sexualized female characters, we will not see a non-Victoria's Secret female character.

Especially with taking into account that Shepard has been augmented (insert your own Deus Ex joke here) during Lazarus project and further in ME2 (skin weave / muscle weave / bone weave).

There's no need to rationalize this, is called Rule of Sexy, and is ok, I buy it. I just wish BioWare could try to be original and not do what every other game out there does with women.

In ME2 everyone has their own scene so I think it's really whether you prefer generic "bed" scene over different scenes for different characters.

I can't actually speak for the guy side I've never seen them , but I guess they would be the same.

I prefer Chloe. But likely that has something to do with Claudia Blacks voice too.

Girls want their characters to be sexy too.  Though possibly in slightly different ways.

Eh, the same thing happened on the Kasumi mission with the armless dress, the problem is that femshep doesn't actually have elbows

I am not sure how everyone is not tired of boob-armor, belly-plate, and bullet-proof G-strings. They make no sense and serve no purpose other than to entertain the male viewer. If the viewer is that horny, may be the should consider some free online materials for their entertainment.
