I get it if it's some guy on his computer modding Oblivion to have his character run around in a lacey thong, there's nothing to stop that. But when the team who designed this came time to design femsheps casual clothes, why did the pick this as something anyone would wear as an everyday choice?

Because they checked the Femshep thread and noticed that a pretty high proportion of people have their Sheps kitted out in the Kasumi dress?

I was looking forward to the N7 hoodie, but unfortunately with the new body model femshep looks like a little boy when she wears it.

Shes the type that looks smaller in clothes.

Did you know a lot of women with eating disorders wear large, lose clothes in hopes of hiding how small they are? Unfortunately this actually makes them look smaller. How oddly revealing.

Somehow it reminds me of Angelina Jolie. One reason why I think she was the wrong cast for Lara Croft or any action movie.

Yes, FemShep is too skinny. There is a difference between being skinny and being muscularly toned skinny. FemShep just looks like she's never lifted weights in her life. Those arms are noodles!

There are many, many, many differeny bodyshapes and bodytypes that are athletic. Being thin and lithe can be athletic -- but not when we're dealing with a character that is military/special ops/etc. background that Shepard has. She should be more muscular and toned. At the very least her proportions should be more like Aveline.

Too bad we only saw male Qunari because the female Qunari stay home. ...hm I'm sensing a trend here?

Well if by trend you mean that femShep and maleShep both get 'generic [gender] body' then yes.

Ah, I should've clarified. I was more leaning towards the female aliens and why we don't see most of them (female salarians stay on the homeworld because of x reason, female krogans live in seperate communes because of x reason, and apparently turians are too difficult to make because they can't just "slap some lipstick on them" as the art director says) but that's an entirely different topic.

Do not get me started on angelina jolie and what the media calls her "mystery illness".

"SOURCES SAY ANGELINA IS NOT EATING!  WHAT ILLNESS COULD THIS BE!?"

Not that I'm going to complain about a thread apparently about Gina Carano stripping down, but I'm mostly just amused that some of you have actually seen femShep in her undies. Is she expected to spend a significant portion of the game like that?

In any case, my femShep is an adept. I don't she her needing tons of mussel for that.

Well this trend is called minimalism. Bioware are rather quick developing their games, compared to for example Bethesda. Funny enough then that there is no time/ressources for diversity.

To be fair Jolie wasn't bone-thin in the TR movies like she is today.  She had an athletic build in those movies that fit the character.

Adept Shepard looking really skinny actually makes sense.  They're burning up a lot of calories when doing Biotics

Though if they spent a few months grounded and thus not using Biotics, they might end up getting a little fat because they're used to eating bigger meals than most people

First of all, I agree with that there is a problem in how Bioware depicts men and woman in mass effect and beyond. Just like it is a problem in so many other places (games, mass media etc).

You could actually do somehing against symbolic against all those nude-mods and the like, and that is actually taking the initiative and define show/describe/define how the characters actually look (in one way or the other). Then those artisically responsible can say: Sorry, but that is not [charcters name] she/he does not look like that butt naked! You got it all wrong silly boy. In that way, generic stereotypes can be countered, at least on a symbolic level.

Heather, agree, femshep took the worst part (but i've not seen many man walking like that)

Android I think that underwear comes from other character, and it's attached to some circumstances, so I don't think it was done like a "everyday choice".

She went through an odd transformation from those years to know. She lost ridiculous amounts of weight and lost a lot of her color, turning her from her olive complexion to the pale color she has now.

Well actually not for the stunts she did. But to be fair neither is the video game Lara Croft model. Obviously the point is that women are supposed to 'do a man's job' but not have the muscle they would need for it. Because the main demographic would not like their pixel women look too masculine.

To make things worse, they reinforce the notion that this was their goal when you look at the differences in the options for their "casual" wear. Has a member of the dev team responded as to why they tried to make femshep look so deliberately " sexy?"

Therein lies the problem. It is a male-dominated industry with a heavily biased userbase. There is very little vision of the contrary to drooling over females. Until developers are willing to step up and go against the grain with non-sexualized female characters, we will not see a non-Victoria's Secret female character.

I get it if it's some guy on his computer modding Oblivion to have his character run around in a lacey thong, there's nothing to stop that. But when the team who designed this came time to design femsheps casual clothes, why did the pick this as something anyone would wear as an everyday choice? Wouldn't it more sensible to have something more like this you know, something more normal for everyday use? If it was just the underwear, then I would agree that they're just guys designing it and it was bound to happen. The fact that it's the underwear, the body model and the casual wear, it's clearly deliberate.

I agree. The underwear is whatever - plenty of women might wear something similar (lacey), given the occasion. Wearing a night dress as casual wear is just strange however, especially for an active person.

I have no doubts that it is in fact deliberate, as this industry is loaded with precedents of female objectification (I am sure I do not need to cite examples).

On the topic of her dress, i guess i get it. Sexiness or whatever. However, since it is N7 issued, wouldn't it makes sense for it to be a bit more proffessional?

I wear dresses to work that are similar to this.

That is pretty sexy and professional in my opinion.
