She punches Shadowbroker back and all that crazy physical stuff. If she would look like normal soldier build, I wouldn't mind it that much, but look at her arms, they are like two thin sticks!
When she punches the Shadow Broker she's halfway Terminator though, cerberus gave her the Wolverine treatment.

I don't get the obsession with these fighter women.
Why not just model her after her voice actress Jennifer Hale, who looks like a healthy woman?
Because FemShep is a super duper elite soldier. One that at times has gone hand to hand with a gigantic alien and held her own. She should look like a fighter.
Many Sheps have biotics, which do not require muscle.
No matter your abilities cutscenes show her punching the crap out of people at times. Even a biotic has to go hand to hand in the fight with the SB. Not to mention even a biotic would still have to meet the physical requirements of being a special forces commando.
You don't have to be a muscleman to be specops. quite the opposite often actually. Its all about endurance. I've talked to norwegian FSK people and they said its actually common to loose 15 kg worth of muscle mass during training due to the enormous strain and non-existant nutrition. All that is required is the mental strength to march 100 km and then not bat an eyelash when you're told to march back again with no reason given. And you don't really need that much muscles to do that, just an iron will.

Sure, every person has their own stereotypes of what a soldier "should" look like, based on historical depictions of soldiers in media, their own experiences, and what have you. But as the linked pictorial shows, people do come in all shapes and sizes, and perhaps we as a media culture should start accepting that different body shapes can still represent strength.

It's a shame that a company looking to appeal to a wide number of demographics would appeal to the broadest demographic in their book?zestyshade wrote...
It is unfortunate that a game and company that claim to be more open-minded by having both genders represented in their media, and exploring more controversial topics like homosexuality, sexualize their female protagonist for the sake of fitting in and possibly higher revenues. If you want to be truly above the fold, how about giving us a female character who is not destined to ultimately be drooled over?

Every main character presented in a video game is intended to be drooled over in some fashion. Maybe some of them are intended to be artsy and/or dark/disturbing. Otherwise it's always sexy. Why is this such a horrible thing? I'm not ashamed of being interested in sex and sexy imagery.zestyshade wrote...

This is true. But it's not super sexy. Sex sells. Plain and simple, if they made Shep less sexy, they'd lose more interest than they would gain from the folks that are pleased that "Shep looks more real." Sex and media always go hand in hand.Freakiq wrote...
You can be chubby without being out of shape.
Just because you're well trained it doesn't mean you can't have some bodyfat.

This is the common argument against FemShep having muscles, but you have to wonder if that's the case - why is MaleShep so muscular?
In ME1 - pre-Cerberus tech - FemShep was still a twig and MaleShep was still ripped - and yet both were just as strong.
It's sad that after 3 games, BioWare still don't seem to know that women are capable of being muscular too - and it doesn't have to be go to a bodybuilder extreme either.
Sure, it's only a game and people do come in all shapes and sizes - but it'd be nice if for once it wasn't always male=musclehead, female=supermodel.

They did but her arms are still bone and muscle besides the additional cybernetics which would let her shoot a claymore without breaking her arm. Still though, desptie the cybernetics she should have some mucsles, not to the poin of looking like the worlds strongest women of course, that would be over doing it.Freakiq wrote...

So having femshep have a body type that is triggering for my entire ED group is okay because some people have that type of body? I wasn't aware that boney bodies with showing ribcages was athletic. And yes, I did show it to them because my group leader suggested I show it because I was confused and triggered by her appearance.
Edit: I would liek to add that all the bodies in the pictures you linked us too do not have boney bodies with rib cages showing.
Edit2: In previous games femshep's body was much smoother. No bone deffantion in her model.

But don't you think it is high time the video game industry was shown a different archetype from lean and skinny for women? We have big men, small men, fat men, skinny men, muscular mean, lean men, ugly men, beautiful men - the whole gamut of different men in video games, yet for women you would be hard-pressed to find anything but 'skinny, lean, and gorgeous' regardless of what they do.

Just not physical strength. With those hands, femShep would not be able to open a jar. Let alone be an elite soldier.

I think the thing people are trying to get across is that the Female Shepard doesn't have any clearly defined musculature and she looks anorexic at best, sickly at worst.

But there was no indication that either of them were exceptionally strong. They were perhaps fairly competent hand to hand combatants - at least as long as they stayed away from the Krogans - but they did nothing which couldn't be explained by simply being well trained.
It's ME2 where they started punching Yahgs.

Said better than I ever could.
It's fine and dandy pointing out that people come in all shapes and sizes - that much is true - but why is it always the men that have all the muscle and the women look like supermodels?
FemShep is often touted as a very progressive entity in video games, but how can that continue to be said when she is given the body of someone who doesn't look like they could even carry the guns she uses.

Again, Gina Carano is a legitimate MMA fighter. "Ribcages showing" is a matter of body fat percentage. Any athelete with the right body fat ratio will have that kind of bone structure exposure. Woo is 100% correct about different athletes all having different body shapes.Sashimi_taco wrote...
