I wasn't aware that boney bodies with showing ribcages was athletic.

Again, Gina Carano is a legitimate MMA fighter. "Ribcages showing" is a matter of body fat percentage. Any athelete with the right body fat ratio will have that kind of bone structure exposure. Woo is 100% correct about different athletes all having different body shapes.

It is unfortunate that a game and company that claim to be more open-minded by having both genders represented in their media, and exploring more controversial topics like homosexuality, sexualize their female protagonist for the sake of fitting in and possibly higher revenues. If you want to be truly above the fold, how about giving us a female character who is not destined to ultimately be drooled over?

It's a shame that a company looking to appeal to a wide number of demographics would appeal to the broadest demographic in their book?

Yes, it is a damn shame that a content creator perpetuates objectification of women for the sake of profits in this male-dominated industry!

In ME1 - pre-Cerberus tech - FemShep was still a twig and MaleShep was still ripped - and yet both were just as strong.

But there was no indication that either of them were exceptionally strong.  They were perhaps fairly competent hand to hand combatants - at least as long as they stayed away from the Krogans - but they did nothing which couldn't be explained by simply being well trained.

It's ME2 where they started punching Yahgs.

In ME1, Shepard knocks Wrex - a fullblooded, extremely strong, armored Krogan - down to the ground with a single strike with his rifle.

1. Find picture of attractive woman stripping.
2. Go to BSN; forum dominated by males.
3. Start "complaint" thread, post found picture of attractive woman stripping in said thread.
4. ???
5. Profit!

Just not physical strength. With those hands, femShep would not be able to open a jar. Let alone be an elite soldier.

I lol'd.

You make a good point.

I had a squad MG gunner that was as skinny, hell, most of my unit were skinny. You'd be surprised what you can push out of skinny. Best hand to hand guy in our squad was this little dude barely 1.70 m high. And he was a monster at wrestling, goddamn monkeyman.

You see, combat unit military life isn't really suited to build up muscle mass. Rather you get better to work with what you got.

Maybe you all should just be pushing for an equal objectification of men?

People are a diverse collection of different genetics and body types. check out this pictorial (warning: athletes in underwear) featuring the body types of many different athletes. You will see that even among those in the same field of athletics, there is a variety of body shapes and sizes.

Sure, every person has their own stereotypes of what a soldier "should" look like, based on historical depictions of soldiers in media, their own experiences, and what have you. But as the linked pictorial shows, people do come in all shapes and sizes, and perhaps we as a media culture should start accepting that different body shapes can still represent strength.

Amen.

now that's a healthy looking game character in that image Bob. Perfectly healthy, not anorexic and some light muscle definition in the arms. Just right for a woman who isn't binging and purging.

It's not about sexy vs not sexy -- it's about interesting vs boring. It is an order of magnitude more difficult to make believable females in games than it is to make their male counterparts. So, when they exaggerate sexual characteristics, it's not necessarily because they are trying to make a female video game character read as sezy -- it's usually because they are trying to make a video game character read as female.

It's ridiculous to look at the ME3 femshep and conclude they were trying to tart her up. They could have gone so much further if that was their intention. They shrunk her waist down, but that's offset by her thunder thighs, giving her that soccer-mom pear shape.

Personally, I would have preferred a taller, more athletic femshep, along with a default head that was modeled after a real person. But really, there's no room to complain. The easiest (and probably smartest) thing in the world for BioWare to do would be to not offer a female option. It didn't hurt the Witcher 2, and people loved to lord that game over the DA2 team.

It means i sat in a therapy group for people with eating disorders and talked about how the new femshep model was confusing, anxiety provoking, and pretty much messing with my head. I was asked to show the picture to the group by the group leader because we were safe and together, and everyone lost their minds.

I don't care that she is oddly shaped and not muscular. The not muscular part i've been dealing with for 2 games, even the part where she is oddly thin for being so strong which is already confusing for people with body issies. It is the skin texture that displays the illusion that she has lost a lot of weight from me2 to me3 and the fact that her bones are highly defined.

Yeah, the body models of the women in the Uncharted series have always looked good.  In shape and still healthy looking.  FemShep just looks a bit too twiggy.

I don't like The Witcher and many people don't. Both males and females to be exact SmokePants. From what I can see it's those who are die hard fans of playing the male protagonist that like The Witcher game series.

You can be chubby without being out of shape.

Just because you're well trained it doesn't mean you can't have some bodyfat.

This is true. But it's not super sexy. Sex sells. Plain and simple, if they made Shep less sexy, they'd lose more interest than they would gain from the folks that are pleased that "Shep looks more real." Sex and media always go hand in hand.

Bones where exactly? An exposed ribcage is not inherently unhealthy. Like I said above, it has to do with body fat percentage. I'd personally be fine with the idea of ripped arms  and legs. Like I mentioned, I think the suggstion that she be build like Gina Carano is not all a bad one. That's a girl that's built to kick the crap out of people.
