I heard about this days ago. From what I understand the rumor is an upcoming HD version of Baldur's Gate with some sort of Steam functionality. I don't use Google Chrome, but checking the source info did reveal this:

<!-- Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine -->
<!-- oh dear it's coming soon -->

So maybe it's true? It could be fun provided this rumor is true and the remake works with existing mods. Otherwise there isn't much incentive to choose this over the GOG version.

Hmmm... yeah, I saw those rumors about an HD version of BG on the Steam forums a while back so take that rumor with a grain of salt.

However, Atari (current publishers of any D&D properties) are teasing something big tomorrow. So maybe BG?

There is a thread over on the Steam forums actually. Baldurs Gate 2 was found in the Steam registry as app id 99140.

http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=2491920

I have no problem buying it a 3rd time! Then again Final Fantasy 7 has been in the registry forever.

This version needs to offer something meaningful for me to justify buying Baldur's Gate a fourth time and BG2 a third. >.< The GOG version has no DRM. Buying an identical rendition on Steam would be a downgrade. It will be cool if the series is exposed to more players, however. If it's an upgraded version I'll be veeery tempted.

Well....thats....yeah, I have no idea what to make of that.

Edit: Well, apparently Oster created the digital download service Beamdog. And a division of Beamdog is Overhaul games, who came out with an HD version of MDK2 last year. So HD version of BG?

Yeah, the GOG version is great being DRM free and mod friendly. A proper HD version would be awesome.

Wow... That logo and that music... Sure brings back memories. :) I doubt that I'll buy it again (I have WAY too many games to play on my plate at the moment), but I think it's awesome that that the classic is getting a facelift and potential exposure to a new wave of fans. :D

Not really interested in this (but still better that nothing) but with the current Kickstarter bubble craze I wish someone would get the idea to start one for the Black Hound.

World needs Infinity Engine II. Bird's eye is such an utterly dead genre these days, it is sad. World should really start getting tired of talking heads and running around in over the shoulder 3rd person pretty soon. By pretty soon I mean circa 2008.

Imagine how awesome modern bird's eye fantasy world would look. Hmm, with dynamic environment too..yes please! Xzar casts fireball in 1st floor of mansion, 2nd floor eventually falls on top of him. Good times. Ok I stop daydreaming now:p

Unless they totally revamped the graphics and the mechanics I wont be interested.

I mean dont get me wrong, in its day it was awesome.
Now however its just plain old and there are better games to play.

The game aged tremendously well and the art-style of BG2 is
mesmerizing. You give me the impression of the type who can't or won't
get entertained without 'state of the art technology' by principe.  Pseudo-Sophistication is quite annoying and seem to be common with gamer.

Maybe am misinterpreting your though. If not than you have my
sympathy. You should work to be more open-minded. I'm not talking only
to you, but everyone who think like you for every other hobby/object.

I simply think its old, and its dated graphics and mechanics render it less enjoyable then playing say Origins, or Skyrim.

Same reason I dont play Fallout 1/2 when I have FONV on hand.
It emulates a tabletop experience very well but its still very old.

I mean its running off the D&D 2nd edition and they have already done two new ones since then.
I am not saying its crap, I am saying that I just dont have fun playing it since other games have refined their mechanics, and improved their looks far better.

If I have to squint and say now what the frak I am looking at...lets just say its time for me to put that game out to pasture.

World is full of Xbox360 games that look more dated than BG2 or Icewind Dale.

But yeah sure, for person who flaunts " it is ooold!!" around as if it were somehow a bad thing in itself, something released over 2 years back can never be a good game I guess. Of course, you are perfectly right. There is no reason why something made with obsolete technology could ever be superior to something  new and exiting, for it is new and exiting  we must worship. This is why Star Wars Episodes 1-3 are vastly superior to OLD trilogy. This is why The Doors has NOTHING on nickelback and why BG II is utter obsolete broken carbage when compared to Dragon Age II. DA II has more polygons afterall.

I certainly hope so. Use dragon age engine maybe? I do not like the constant isometric view in BG.

HD does not mean a complete redesign of the engine. The HD MDK2 had updated textures and resolution. At its core it was still the same game. I would expect similar treatment here. Besides, it would hardly be Baldur's Gate without an isometric view.

I understand what you're saying, but I have to say I love the Infinity Engine games. In fact, despite the newer games I purchased over the last year, in that same time span I still did 7 runs through IWD1, 1 through IWD2, 4 through BG1, and one through BG2. They never get old or tired to me.

I'm more than willing to concede that much of the appeal is nostalgia though. I'm old and grew up playing the AD&D rules, so even though they're not as 'refined' and often don't make much practical sense, I still like them best of all the D&D rule sets.

Still though, I doubt an HD version will be enough to prompt me to buy BG for the 4th time either.

I think that's true for everyone. D&D's rulesets have changed so much between editions, they are not refinements so much as lateral moves. Some mechanics are retained and altered here and there, but each edition plays fairly differently and earns its diehard supporters.

I was properly introduced to D&D via the Infinity Engine games, but it was not until 3e when I really got into it. Unsurprisingly, it remains my favored edition.

There are lots of folks that still support 1e and 2e with freely available homebrew creations or purchasable products. The Adventure Conqueror King system that recently released, for example.

Aye, very good point. I do, however, enjoy the other editions as well (I'm not one of those fanatical fans that thinks any deviation from my preferred edition is heresy), but yeah 2nd edition has a special place in my heart. All those weekends and late nights playing that edition with my buddies in high school... good times. good times.

According to a story posted minutes ago at Gamebanshee, this website is not related to Steam's upcoming release of the series. Looks like I will be buying Baldur's Gate a fourth time after all. Is that... excitement I feel? Yes. Yes, I believe it is. :)

Heh...I think they're lurking on the forums here. So it looks like Oster is making an HD version of BG, like they did for MDK.

So we can safely assume that it won't be the abominable 4E rules then?! If it's a game you guys are going to announce anyways.
