Maybe Ultima? I don't think I would ever get into the game with the way it looks. And even though I admit how shallow that is for a gamer to say, it's from a time way past mine. I love Baldur's gate to bits. But I don't think I could stand the black and blue lines/dots of Ultima.

To each his own but I've replayed Ultima III to VI last year and while I welcome the improvements on the graphic departments and agree that those games look dated, at the same time I think that the classic Ultimas still hold their ground and that are superior to many hyped "rpgs" of our age in terms of gameplay and roleplaying.

They are still quite addictive and very fun. The lack of photorealistic graphics leaves a lot of space for your imagination to cover and so it's in many ways easier to get immersed in the story. No one hold your hands and that's refreshing. In sum, there is a lot of opportunity for emerging roleplaying. Today there is none (at least, if you do not consider aimless Skyrim's exploration as a proper substitute for emergent gaming).

Btw, drawing maps of the dungeouns is a very fun minigame in itself.

I must say...this has me more hyped up then the release of ME3 AND the DA PAX session combined! All other gamingsites I read were all pretty hyped up about this...and it's only a site with practically nothing on it!

So...who said that classic RPGs were dead??

Contrary to popular belief, the people that bought the games such as BG and PS:T when they first hit the shops are still alive and kicking, and avid gamers no less ;). Not to mention word of mouth and services like gog have kept the games relevant to this day.

I guess if you want to get into Ultima, you could try out the Lazarus project, which is a fanmade Ultima V remake using the Dungeon Siege engine. 3d, real time combat, etc. I believe it's Lead Designer went on to work as the Lead Designer for KoA.

Personally what stopped me from really getting myself into the Ultima games VI and onwards (though I have now played IV, VI and VII Pt. 1 for a handful of hours each) was the perspective. My God, I can't even play Black Gate for more than 20-30 minutes at a time despite happily spending 3-4 hour sessions on a game like Darklands (an equally old game), because of the camera perspective.

Is there a way to change/fix it?

As for on topic, I don't think any of the games particularly need an HD remake, especially with all the mods out now that support widescreen, or overhauls/restored content and the like.

What would be good if there were new games in the style of the old ones that matched them in quality, too.

Basically, what Troika did with Arcanum in an attempt to create a new and unique RPG that followed in the vein of Fallout. That said, I don't mind remakes and if they were good/drummed up enthusiasm for such games, then I'd be okay with buying them.

As for games that should get remakes, the IE games + FO game remakes seem okay, but I'd sperg so hard if there was ever a Darklands, Anachronox or System Shock 2 HD remake.

Im already camped at their door for PST and FO1-2, you can  join me :)

I'll join you to get a remake of PST and F01-2.

So, just to sum up, our requests demands include Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and Fallout. Anything else we want to add?

I'm going to request a full remake of Return to Krondor.

Yeah. I said it.

Also, I'd love to see a remkae of BG sell more than DA2. It will probably be less expensive than the $60 price tag DA2 had, but it would still prove a point, I think.

Crusty,

I find it sad that you didn't like Ultima VII. Although Black Gate PALED in comparisson to the Serpent Isle. That was a pinacle of Ultima, right there.

Also, the fact that you unapologetically refer to Arcanum in your posts multiple times on these boards warms my heart. That was a game that truly reached for the stars and just happened to come out right when the PC began to wane and the console began to take over. It is truly an overlooked game.

@Jimmy: It's not that I don't like Ultima VII, it's just that the camera perspective has really put me off to the point where I haven't played enough to get stuck into it. I'm sure that if I forced myself to sit down and have at it for more than 15-20 minutes, I'd get used to the camera angle and eventually fall in love with the game.

But I've got too many games on my backlist, and things like my F2 LP or real life (though I like to ignore that one sometimes =P), so I just never find the time I need for U7.

Some folks on the Exult forums were discussing a method to make Ultima 7 appear isometric using some code magic within the last year or so. It actually looked okay, surely a lot better if you were to use some scaling filters like hq4x or whatever it's called. I'm not sure if they ever implemented it though.

Give me BG, PST and IWD with ToEE's combat engine and graphics.

Of course, I would rather have completely new TB d&d CRPGs, but if we're talking about changing already existing games...

Give me PS:T with an engine where it'd truly feel at home.
...Don't get me wrongly, I love infinity and PS:T both. Just that I always felt they make bit of a poor match. Torment would have flourished in an engine allowing an occasional puzzle and such. Something build with telling of story in mind, something borrowing heavily from adventure genre perhaps.  Much of Infinity's strength rests in combat. In PS:T, combat always feels equivalent to phone ringing when you are in middle of a good book. It just isn't a good marriage.

If this is (purportedly) to be a true HD remake, I would seriously be interested in this. BG is in my top 5 all time :D. Of course it would definitely have to be DRM free; too much of that as it is now, when considering :/ .

Yea, the only things I'm really anticipating (besides Dead State and Age of Decadence) are these kickstarter projects.  (Wasteland 2 and hopefully Obsidian's one)

Too bad that Legend of Grimrock is real time because it looks interesting.

Avernum and Eschalon Book 3 don't sound too bad either. Wasteland 2 definitely takes the cake though. The website should be up later today.

Would they announce a BG remaster or port at GDC? I thought that was an event geared more towards developers.

While I'm waiting for new great RPG's, I scour the net for odler ones.

I recently played Drakensang (and the sequel, River of Time).
Got to say, River of Time is AMAZING. I love it as much as DA:O. Do recomend to any RPG lover.
