I'm thinking of creating a warrior to play the role of tank. I ran my last playthrough using Alistair as a sword/shield tank and he handled well enough.
I'm curious as to whether I can tank with a 2-hander (high strength for massive armor), or if a shield is absolutely necessary.
Side question: How much constitution do I need as a tank? I've heard some people say that 20 is enough, they put the rest into Dex (for dodge),Strength (wear the highest end armor), and a bit in Magic just so heals land harder.
Thanks.
2-Hand Tank?

2h tanking is perfectly viable, as far as mine check Couldar's stats in my profile he did great as a tank, and I really wasn't trying to tank with him...just ran into a room flailing my axe or sword or hammer around trying to kill everything

Is there a point to going sword & board then? Only real benefit I can think of is the flank immunity. The loss of mitigation from the shield and it's talents can be made up for by the increased damage that the 2-handed weapon tree brings.

Tanked most of hard as 2h warrior, but used Alistair/Shale for High Dragon and such. And having a sword-and-board tank is situationally useful but not necessary.
Gear matters more. One advantage is that you needn't mess around with dex at first so you can where heavier armor, sooner. (If you have Blood Dragon plate, it obviously makes a huge difference.)
I dunno if I would skimp on Con, though. High con lets you go longer in battle without using any heals, and more health will help your survive when you're overpowered or being snacked on by a dragon.

Sword and board tanks are still useful in this game and can dish out quite a bit of damage when set up right, my next play through is probably going to be sword and board if just so I can see just how much more damage than Alistair I can get.

Well I know from personal exp DW tank is perfectly viable for nightmare, but thats mostly because they dish out a hell of a lot of damage, and also have a huge def score from pumping dex so much. I'm sure you could make a TH tank work (especialy if you cheese it with two mages or something) They barely do more damage than sword and board tanks though, and have far less survivability. So be prepared for a wobbly start until you get some good massive armor.

Meh I dont know about that relhart my 2her was by far doing the most damage, and only brought Wynne as a healer. As far as survivable, unless I just completely forgot about using any kind of tactics I had no probs with staying alive. Most of his deaths were from just blizting a room and my group not keeping up.

S&B seems to do only slightly less damage than 2 Handed fighting so you wont gain much DPS. The Shield Warrior will have a lot higher Defense i guess, which isnt particularly helpful for bosses (they hit you anyways) but can be a great help for hordes of little monsters who will miss the Shield bearer often. Armor will also be higher, and increases at the high end can be very valuable.
On the other hand, the Two Hander is immune to stuns, and does a bit more damage (maybe)...
Con only gives 5 HP per point, so it's a pretty unimpressive stat imho. 10 points into Con is a high investment when building the character, and all it gives is 50 hp more... meh.

S&B has a talent that is immune to stuns and knockdowns just like indomitable...

I believe it's only immunity to Knockdowns, not stuns, but i might be wrong.

Shield Wall only prevents knockdowns, yes. Direct knockdowns that is. Meaning, if something like the broodmother hits you, you will get thrown back but not knocked on your can if you have either Indomitable or Shield Wall up. But Shield Wall does NOT help with, say, running through a Blizzard. You will still slip and fall down, while Indomitable allows you to just plow through it.
After using Oghren in the Deep Roads, I'm a bit more inclined to try a two-handed warrior myself because that talent is awesome. But, misses are very painful given how slow you swing, and most of the other talents feel a bit uninspired ...

2Hers have three useful talents: mighty blow, sweep, and indomitable. Situationally, the sunders can be good as well.
The problem with 2Hers is that their damage output is inferior to DWing (even on multiple mobls thanks to DW sweep and WW) and their tanking ability is inferior to S&B. It's a viable build, but it's suboptimal in almost every circumstance. It's also incredibly frustrating to watch those super slow whiffs.

That's WHY 2h is a solid tree. Sunders attack TWICE, which makes them by far the best DPS move while debuffing the target aswell..

i'd say a 2H and S&B are a good match, because with your S&B,you can obatain the Warrior TAUNT ability, and that with all your other weapons & shield abilities like Shield expertise and Shield block etc. so with taunt on your s&b char TAKING all the damage, you can have your 2h GIVING all the damage.
