I am so freakin' tired of 20-40 wandering monsters between any one point and another. It's my 1st time in Act 3, and I gained 2 levels from the Viper Temple to the World Serpent!
So. Freaking. Boring.
Love the game otherwise, though.
Dear God, please make the wandering monsters stop

SoZ Overland Encounter Reducer (v1.0)
Worked for me. I used this before one of the patches reduced the frequency of encounters. Imagine, there used to be more.
Edit: To make a proper link.

Yes - it can be tiresome taking two or three steps, slaughtering an encounter group easily, then taking another two or three steps towards your goal. Often the transition between areas takes longer than the encounter itself. You'd think those beasties would learn not to mess with you after their relatives got slaughtered, but no - they just keep hurling themselves at you regardless.
You can always try stocking up on tanglefoot bags. If you've got at least one in your inventory then you seem to get pre-encounter options to use them in order to make a quick get-away.

ain't there a ranger or rogue within your party? make one of them the leader and with their nature/stealth skills you shouldn't run into unintended encounters.

Yes, by the time we were at the Viper temple (and even before then) our party was picking and choosing our encounters.
Also, intimidation feats will help scare away the critters.
Harumph!
